Are film critics a dying breed?

I’ve been hearing that will all the layoffs and job troubles, many newspapers are scrapping their film reviewers.  Do you still have a local film critic where you live?  Here’s a site that is being continually updated with the last full time film reviewers left.

Cherrybomb

Here’s a trailer for a new film called Cherrybomb starring Rupert Grint (Ron Weasely from the Harry Potter series).  It looks like it could be cool, almost like an updated Trainspotting with younger characters.  I’m definitely interested in seeing this when it comes out.

New Criterion Collection

The Criterion Collection has always been known for it’s collection of classic, timeless films.  The films that persist and stick around for generations.  In fact, there are only a dozen or so film from the last decade and two of them happen to be by Wes Anderson.

In an unprecedented move, the Criterion people have decided to add a film to it’s collection from 2008.  Usually it takes a while to get in.  Can you guess what made it?  No, not Dark Knight, Milk, The Wrestler or Slumdog Millionaire.  Give up?  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Now I know that Armageddon is on the Criterion list.  So maybe this just follows suit.  The aging and the time stuff was kind of cool, but other then that it was just ok.  Thoughts on this?  Am I coming off all High Fidelity elite?

Ghost Dog fans

If you enjoy what Jim Jarmusch has made, particularly Ghost Dog, you might want to check out his upcoming film The Limits of Control.  Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Tilda Swinton (who really looks like Angelica Huston in the trailer), John Hurt and Bill Murray - this film looks promising.

No, seriously. I don’t have kids.

It seems like people have always thought I’m older than I really am.  I’m sure there are a variety of reasons for that.  The summer after I got out of high school I worked with a bunch of late 20-somethings through 40 yr olds and they always invited me out to the bars with them after work.  It wasn’t until the end of that summer that they found out I was 17, not 28.  All through college people continued to think I was much older - probably because of the bald head thing and the facial hair.

Today really took the cake though.  Liz and I were meeting up at the theater to see Oliver Stone’s latest - W.  While I was waiting in the lobby for her to get off work, a woman kept smiling at me from about 5 feet away.  I eventually did the polite thing and said, “hi.”  I’m not sure if that was a good thing or bad thing.  She wouldn’t stop talking to me.  I kinda feel like she was hitting on me.  Turns out she was there waiting for her high-school-aged-daughter to come out of a movie to give her a ride home.  She apparently assumed I was there to pick up my 15 yr old too.  I told her I wasn’t waiting for my child, then had to repeatedly reinforce the fact I don’t even have kids.  Let’s just say I felt saved when Liz finally showed up and I could walk away.

Jesse James

I just saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It was kind of a depressing movie. I liked it a lot, but it was a bit of a downer.  Makes me think of the Alice Cooper song.

Commercial songs

Ever watch a commercial and you’re dying to know what that song was?  I’ve been trying to figure out why I know the song from the new Dodge Journey commercial.  I thought it kinda sounded like Weezer or Ozma, but didn’t think that’s who it was.  Just found out it’s AM180 by Grandaddy.  It’s also on the 28 Days Later soundtrack.  Good song and a good movie.  You should check both of them out.

What if?

Here’s a little gem Joe shared with me from the interwebs.  What if celebrities moved to Oklahoma?

Sponsored Review

I posted my first sponsored review today.  A grassroots marketing company contacted me to review an upcoming DVD release.  It kinda cool to find out somebody like that likes your movie reviews.  Hopefully I’ll be asked to do more in the future.

Oscars 2008: Daniel drank their milkshakes

If the title doesn’t make any sense, you need to go watch There Will Be Blood. Surprisingly, the Oscars were interesting all the way through this year for me. Really enjoyed Jon Stewart as host and my favorites picked up a lot of awards. I have a longer post here on my movie blog.
