It seems like people have always thought I’m older than I really am. I’m sure there are a variety of reasons for that. The summer after I got out of high school I worked with a bunch of late 20-somethings through 40 yr olds and they always invited me out to the bars with them after work. It wasn’t until the end of that summer that they found out I was 17, not 28. All through college people continued to think I was much older - probably because of the bald head thing and the facial hair.
Today really took the cake though. Liz and I were meeting up at the theater to see Oliver Stone’s latest - W. While I was waiting in the lobby for her to get off work, a woman kept smiling at me from about 5 feet away. I eventually did the polite thing and said, “hi.” I’m not sure if that was a good thing or bad thing. She wouldn’t stop talking to me. I kinda feel like she was hitting on me. Turns out she was there waiting for her high-school-aged-daughter to come out of a movie to give her a ride home. She apparently assumed I was there to pick up my 15 yr old too. I told her I wasn’t waiting for my child, then had to repeatedly reinforce the fact I don’t even have kids. Let’s just say I felt saved when Liz finally showed up and I could walk away.
I just saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It was kind of a depressing movie. I liked it a lot, but it was a bit of a downer. Makes me think of the Alice Cooper song.
Ever watch a commercial and you’re dying to know what that song was? I’ve been trying to figure out why I know the song from the new Dodge Journey commercial. I thought it kinda sounded like Weezer or Ozma, but didn’t think that’s who it was. Just found out it’s AM180 by Grandaddy. It’s also on the 28 Days Later soundtrack. Good song and a good movie. You should check both of them out.
Here’s a little gem Joe shared with me from the interwebs. What if celebrities moved to Oklahoma?
I posted my first sponsored review today. A grassroots marketing company contacted me to review an upcoming DVD release. It kinda cool to find out somebody like that likes your movie reviews. Hopefully I’ll be asked to do more in the future.
If the title doesn’t make any sense, you need to go watch There Will Be Blood. Surprisingly, the Oscars were interesting all the way through this year for me. Really enjoyed Jon Stewart as host and my favorites picked up a lot of awards. I have a longer post here on my movie blog.
I’ve been kinda out of it for a while. My lungs quit working for a few days again. I really need to get a new pair. I’ve been doing a lot of work on the movie blog; writing reviews and retroactively categorizing is a lot of work. I think I just finished up through June of 2005 last night.
If you have Netflix you might want to check out their on-demand viewing. I looked at it when it first came out and there were maybe 20-30 titles for each genre and absolutely nothing I wanted to watch or hadn’t seen already. I’ve been watching a few over the past couple days though and the selection has been greatly increased. There are even 2007 films you can watch. You can even watch as much as you please. When it first started you were allowed X amount of films or maybe there was a time limit. I don’t really remember.
This weekend Schnaps, Soulman and I got together for our annual January pow-wow. This year we were back in Columbus and on Saturday we caught a midnight showing of The Big Lebowski at Studio 35. A few people dressed up to one degree or another and one guy was definitely looking like The Dude. The theater had a full menu of snacks, pizza and sandwiches available. I know the pizza comes from down the street, but I’m not sure about the other food. Maybe everything came from that other restaurant. They also serve beer if you’re into that.
It was my first time to see The Big Lebowski on the silver screen. I’ve seen it on some pretty big TVs and even on a projector before, but never in an actual theater. Studio 35 did seem a bit rundown, but I really felt like this is the kind of place The Dude would go catch a movie at. The price was definitely right, the staff was cool and the overall experience was pretty great. If I actually lived in Columbus I’d definitely go back more often. I had thought about maybe trying to interview some people for my podcast, but decided I didn’t really want to mess with it. I did wear my sweatshirt though and advertised I was going to be there on our site. If you’re interested in other Lebowski showings, I’ve started up an area on our forums for it. Feel free to post any we don’t have listed or you can contact us and we’ll add it for you.
Can’t say I’ve seen as much sunshine as in the movie of said name, but I am getting more sunshine here in Florida than I would be getting in Indiana. We’re down here with Liz’s family right now at their condo - living it up and watching copious amounts of Battlestar Galactica. Rajeev hadn’t ever seen it before so he’s being inundated.
Other than a few bug bites, we’ve been having a good time. I’ve been able to hit the little gym here every day along with a little pool time as well. We even went out and saw Sweeney Todd. Liz, Phil and I loved it, but the rest of the crowd didn’t like it quite as much. Speaking of that, I need to write up a review.
Sometimes it takes certain circumstances, skills or people to get things done. If you need to put out a fire you might need a fireman. If you need your neighbors to shut up you might need a policeman. If you want fly around the city using spiderwebs you might need to be Spiderman and if you want your rug back - and I do mean a rug that ties the room together - you might need The Dude.
A lot of you know about how our last apartment ended with the great flood of 2007. That wasn’t a much of fun. We’ve been living in a new place that’s definitely better in a variety of ways. When we applied to live here, the owner seemed all impressed about Liz’s maiden name and some family connections and Liz has just communicated with him since we’ve moved in. There have been several issues with things in the apartment and at first they were fixed quite promptly.
Then there was a new maintenance guy that wasn’t necessarily real reliable about communicating and what not. We then found out he was originally hired as just the lawn guy and the main maintenance person was gone or something. Well the new guy is back and after weeks and weeks of bugging the temp, we got the main person to look at our front door which happens to be too big for the frame and leaks a lot of air. Well, that was about it. It was looked at, but nothing’s happened.
So this afternoon I sent an email to our friendly landlord. I received a response within a couple hours and after we got home, the maintenance guy called us up asking if we’d be around tomorrow. He’s coming by in the morning, he just has a show he needs to watch first. Liz was pretty surprised at the response to my request. I just told her I was the just the right man for this particular time and place.
