Guitar Hero for Nintendo DS

I just found out this morning - Guitar Hero is releasing a version of it’s game for the Nintendo DS. I have a DS Lite. I had seen other instrument games for the system and have been a little skeptical, however, it looks like this version might actually work. There’s an add-on thing that you plug into the cartridge spot(links to images on that page) on your DS for the fret buttons. It’s not coming out until this summer, but you can pre-order and get a free key-chain.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

If you didn’t know there’s a new version of Guitar Hero coming out totally based on one band and that band is Aerosmith.  It’s based on the GH3 game and chronicles the life of the band from start to finish.  I haven’t seen a song list yet, but I’m assuming they’re all Aerosmith songs.  I’d really like to see a Metallica version, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon with the He-Man-Internet-Haters.  Here’s an article from USA Today.

Listen up Guitar Hero fanatics

You can now play your favorite guitar songs on your PC.  Check this out.  A big thanks to Andy from TeamSoell for informing me about this.  It looks pretty cool and apparently you can download lots and lots of songs.

Rock Session

Yesterday, to celebrate the 4th…obviously, Soulman and I rocked out 2-player on Guitar Hero.  We were checking around and nobody seems to rent the guitars for PS2, only X-Box.  So I picked up another guitar.  The used place was selling them for the same price as I could go buy a brand new one, so the decision didn’t really have to be made.  I think the investment will be well worth it.

New Toy

So Saturday afternoon I picked up Guitar Hero II and a PS2.  I beat the game on Easy Saturday and yesterday I beat the game on Medium.  It’s pretty fun and a little addicting.  Liz has even started playing.  It kinda reminds me of when I used to play my clarinet as far as finger work goes.  It’s also fun to play a lot of the songs blind.  By blind I mean not having seen the music before.  Reminds me of when Matt and I would improv all the songs in pep band by jumping octaves, adding notes and what not.

Risk

Saturday, Liz, Robby, Matt and myself all sat down at our table to a game of Risk.  I hadn’t played in a very long time.  Last time would have been college or before.  It was a lot of fun.  We all made the mistake of trusting Robby and he beat us all in a Napoleonic/Hitler-esque move.  It was impressive.

Maybe we can get a game day every other week or once a month.  That would be a lot of fun.

Gaming

I used to be a big gamer. I remember a big chunk of my senior year in high school being spent playing Starcraft on the weekends and my mom telling me I needed to be doing something more constructive like preparing for college. Funny thing is that after I got to college I kinda quit playing computer games - unless they were large, group LAN games….like Starcraft. Basically I turned something personal into something social. I was still on my computer playing a game, but now I was banding together with my friends to defeat a common foe.

Anyways, I started playing a game again. This time it’s Civilization 3. I picked it up over Christmas with a gift card at Best Buy. If you’re into the strategy-turn based games, this one is worth it. Last night I finally conquered the world diplomatically by being elected leader of the United Nations. I did it playing the Russians which are a scientific and expansionist civilization. It was actually pretty easy. I had everything set to easy and never even fired a single shot. I’ll have to give it another run through with the settings harder. The first run was just to see how the game played and what the new features are.

One thing I kind of liked was being able to set my workers to auto-pilot. The only problem is that if something happened like pollution near a city, 10 workers would rush to the spot to try and clean it up. I’d say it works well to get your initial irrigation/mining/road building out of the way. However, when you want to strategically start placing railroads and doing other functions, you’ll probably need to take control of them again. You’ll also notice that there aren’t engineers. You’re workers you create at the beginning of the game won’t need to be upgraded later.

There are a few new buildings and the technologies aren’t setup the same. I think there are more technologies than before and definitely more buildings/units. I also really like how the civilpedia is setup. Easy to use and easy to navigate. One major change is the availability of resources. Certain units and city upgrades require the presence of certain raw materials. If those aren’t present, you can’t build them. It took me forever to realize I couldn’t build railroads because I didn’t have any coal. It can be annoying, but it makes it more realistic at the same time.

Next time I play I might go for a military win. I find it hard to try and stage war and being scientifically productive at the same time. We’ll just have to see. I usually go for expansion, science and creating wonders. Fighting battles is usually an annoyance, but I also usually go for democracy and not some of the other, more military governments like communism and fascism. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
