Ochotoberfest

I’ve been realizing recently that even though I can juggle multiple side-projects at once, I can only really pour lots of time and energy into one.  For a while now, that one has been my podcast.  So that means I post on here about once a week and I put up movie reviews on my other blog a couple times a month and I haven’t touched my Spanish blog in months.

This weekend marks the eighth annual Oktoberfest with Schnaps, Soulman, BHouse, Gavette, Barn, Butros, Whipple, Ed, Stavros, etc.  I sadly missed number 6 because my lungs weren’t working, but I’m excited for number eight.  Last year was dubbed Augbachtobirthdayfest or something along those lines.  It happened to be in August and fell on mine and Cameron’s birthday.  This year Soulman’s calling it Ochtoberfest.  I’m definitely looking forward to some new catch phrases.  Something emerges every year but not many have stuck around.  I think my most famous phrase has been “PARTY VEHICLE!!!!!!!!!!!” which is what you call a vehicle you could possible have a party in.  There’ll also be some Whipple-ball, videos games, TV watching and lots of hilarity.  And who can forget topping everything off with a trip to Schmitt’s Sausage Haus in quest for the ever elusive “meat headache”?  Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of number 5 where the neighbors called the cops.  Funny thing is their party was way louder than us listening to music on the porch.  People are weird sometimes.

Turnin Back the Clock

In a lame attempt to be cool I’ve decided to take us back to 1996 and have What’s Hot and What’s Not.

Hot:
- Donald Miller’s latest book
- Okfest 2k5
- Serenity is finally out in theaters
- Grilled Cheese

Not:
- Chronic respiratory diseases
- Missing Okfest 2k5
- Gas prices
- Crazy weather

Home Theater

Tonight I had the pleasure of enjoying a movie in the home-made theater that Ed made. Ed’s one of the maintenance guys at work and is a bit of a movie lover like myself. It’s not exactly to his liking yet, but he has a nice CRT projector, surround sound and theater style seats. I think it’s a pretty nice setup the way it is, but Ed’s still wanting to improve.

Liz finally made it down to Florida today. I’m sure Harley and Dyna are glad to be out of the car. This weekend also starts Okfest 2k5. It should be yet another glorious reunion of Centre Morris as we all converge upon the German Village, act silly, get meat headaches and laugh until our sides hurt. I think Phil and Ed moved into their new house too. So there’ll be lots happening when I get over there.

Driving all day yesterday has left me tired and in want of sleep. I think I’m going to maybe read some stuff then call it a day.

Aftermath

Well, another great Oktoberfest. I believe this makes number 5. Started out actually going to the festival to make fun of people with mullets in Columbus, but now we just hang out at Soulman’s place.

Here’s some of the highlights:

  • Gavette singing and dancing
  • Cowgirl and her party next door
  • Throwing the frisbee on various garage roofs
  • New sound system on Mr. Sandwich
  • Lady cop asking us to be quiet
  • Halo
  • BHouse chatting online
  • Extremely cheap pastries from the panadería
  • Burritos from that burrito place
  • Pizza
  • More engraving mistakes from Bhouse’s brother
  • Schnaps and I weren’t the youngest ones there

Well, I could go on and on but some things are too hard to write and some things you probably don’t care to hear about. It’s always great to see the guys. It’s too bad Butros is in Japan and couldn’t make it. Schnaps was able to make it this year which was very nice. A big surprise was this was the first year since this started that Schnaps and I weren’t the youngest ones there. I don’t really know how many more ‘younger’ people we’ll get to this thing because nobody really knows most the people that show up from the floors. Next year will be back in Columbus….a ‘going back to the roots’ sort of movement if you will. Unfortunately none of us knows the whereabouts of Heather, but we have Cowgirl now and I’m sure Soulman will have new neighbors.

Labor Day

I really have no idea what the history is behind Labor Day, but I do know that it’s a paid vacation day for me so I’m definitely in favor of it. I’d have to say today was a nice and relaxing day. Played some frizolf, made some burritos for lunch, hung out with some people, etc. Definitely good times. Tomorrow starts another busy week with trying to fix things, training student workers and Oktoberfest 2k4 with Soulman in Chicago this coming weekend.

Lately I’ve started re-listening to some bands that I love but have pseudo forgotten as of late. These would include The Transplants, Muse, Pixies, Cold Play, The Raveonettes, etc. Music is so diverse and cool. I know some people that listen to music and have mood swings. I like to think I listen to music based upon the mood I’m in. I wonder if they’ve ever done studies on this kind of thing. There’s that line in High Fidelity where John Cusack wonders if kids were depressed from listening to pop music or listened to pop music because they were depressed. It may sound trivial but I’d say it’s something worth thinking about.

Gave away some more of those tamales today. I have some more strawberries left, I might just use the rest of those to make more. I should try other kinds of tamales too. I wonder what the next type of ‘hispanic’ food I should make is. Any suggestions? I still haven’t gotten the recipe for enchiladas from my grandma yet. I should call her up and ask her. If I mastered those, I’d truly feel like an accomplished cook and have the ability to make my favorite foods whenever I feel like it.
