For those of you who are my friends, you should know by now how much I love the BP in the town where I live. You probably also know about my “Vote for Pedro” hat that I’ve been wearing for over 2 years now.
Recently I’ve been getting comments about the hat because it’s an election year. Apparently nobody has noticed it until now. The other day, one of the ladies at the BP made a comment about my hat and I told her it was a movie reference. Today I went in to pick up a beverage and some Boscos and that same lady said, “hey, I don’t even know your name but I thought of you the other day.”
me: Oh yeah?
lady: Yeah, I watched this crazy movie called Napoleon Dynamite and I was like - that’s what that hat means on that guy who always comes in.
me: Oh, cool.
lady: Yeah, I bet you can’t believe I hadn’t seen it yet.
So I introduced myself. It’s cool being recognized at some of your favorite local places.
This weekend Schnaps, Soulman and I got together for our annual January pow-wow. This year we were back in Columbus and on Saturday we caught a midnight showing of The Big Lebowski at Studio 35. A few people dressed up to one degree or another and one guy was definitely looking like The Dude. The theater had a full menu of snacks, pizza and sandwiches available. I know the pizza comes from down the street, but I’m not sure about the other food. Maybe everything came from that other restaurant. They also serve beer if you’re into that.
It was my first time to see The Big Lebowski on the silver screen. I’ve seen it on some pretty big TVs and even on a projector before, but never in an actual theater. Studio 35 did seem a bit rundown, but I really felt like this is the kind of place The Dude would go catch a movie at. The price was definitely right, the staff was cool and the overall experience was pretty great. If I actually lived in Columbus I’d definitely go back more often. I had thought about maybe trying to interview some people for my podcast, but decided I didn’t really want to mess with it. I did wear my sweatshirt though and advertised I was going to be there on our site. If you’re interested in other Lebowski showings, I’ve started up an area on our forums for it. Feel free to post any we don’t have listed or you can contact us and we’ll add it for you.
If you’re a frequenter of the Lebowski Fest Forums, then you most definitely already know about this. If not, here’s the scoop.
The movie is called The Amateurs starring Jeff Bridges, Patrick Fugit, William Fichtner, Tim Blake Nelson, Joe Pantoliano, Ted Danson and plenty of other people you’ll recognize. It’s about a town of amateurs who want to make a full length, clean, adult film. Here’s a link to the trailer and here’s a link to some photos Jeff Bridges took during production. If you didn’t know, he’s into photography and does that. I have some of the photos he took during production of The Big Lebowski and they’re amazing.
So if this looks interesting, please help us get the word out. The Dude Abides.
It’s official. Joan, the best sandwich artist ever, doesn’t work at Subway anymore. She’s down at Cracker Barrel. She was the main reason Gunner and I would go to Subway every Tuesday. She knew us. She knew what we wanted and she was good at what she did. Maybe if I’m down at Cracker Barrel I’ll have to see if she’s around to say hi. These other people they have making sandwiches just don’t work the bread and toppings like a pro.
Last time I went to Subway I tried Gunner’s suggestion of putting some spicy brown mustard on my chicken bacon ranch. It sounded a little weird, but I was totally up for it. Let me assure you it tastes amazingly good.
We’ve been a little bummed though because the regular subway lady hasn’t been there. We were thinking today that maybe her shift ends at 1:00. We used to always go in the 11-12 hour, but now we don’t head over until 1. When other people make our sandwiches it just isn’t the same.
I’ve been realizing recently that even though I can juggle multiple side-projects at once, I can only really pour lots of time and energy into one. For a while now, that one has been my podcast. So that means I post on here about once a week and I put up movie reviews on my other blog a couple times a month and I haven’t touched my Spanish blog in months.
This weekend marks the eighth annual Oktoberfest with Schnaps, Soulman, BHouse, Gavette, Barn, Butros, Whipple, Ed, Stavros, etc. I sadly missed number 6 because my lungs weren’t working, but I’m excited for number eight. Last year was dubbed Augbachtobirthdayfest or something along those lines. It happened to be in August and fell on mine and Cameron’s birthday. This year Soulman’s calling it Ochtoberfest. I’m definitely looking forward to some new catch phrases. Something emerges every year but not many have stuck around. I think my most famous phrase has been “PARTY VEHICLE!!!!!!!!!!!” which is what you call a vehicle you could possible have a party in. There’ll also be some Whipple-ball, videos games, TV watching and lots of hilarity. And who can forget topping everything off with a trip to Schmitt’s Sausage Haus in quest for the ever elusive “meat headache”? Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of number 5 where the neighbors called the cops. Funny thing is their party was way louder than us listening to music on the porch. People are weird sometimes.
That’s right folks. Neville returned from China. No more teaching English and film…at least for a little while. Neville’s on his way back to Fuller, but found some time to stop by and say hi to us on Sunday. I even got him to be on Episode 9 of my podcast and it turned out to be really good. I’m not done editing, but hopefully I’ll have it done and ready to go soon.
I’ve seen probably 4 or 5 movies I need to write reviews for as well as typing something up about I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski. Work has been kinda crazy after coming back from vacation. Hopefully some of that will taper off too.
Oh, and today also happens to be Tuesday which means SUBWAY day. Gunner and I will be picking up where we left off in May. I haven’t had a Chicken Bacon Ranch in quite some time.
Today at my weekly Subway lunch something awesome happened. The most-amazing-Subway-lady-ever remembered the bread I like and what I wanted without having to ask me first. Have I finally become a “regular” again somewhere? I guess time will tell on this one.
Last weekend was our super wedding weekend with a total of three we were wanting to attend. Unfortunately, we only made it to two of them; one being in Muncie and the other simultaneously in Chicago. The first wedding was some friends of ours from church - Sera and Elliot. That was fun. During the reception Matt, Weber and I discussed some Guitar Hero strategy.
Wedding number 2 was long-awaited and much-anticipated being it was the one and only Bendog and Jodi. Bendog was one of the many Ben’s involved in my wedding as well as another illustrious member of the fabled SammyII crowd. It was a little hot outside during the actual ceremony, but we were soon ushered inside to the sweet embrace of central air.
There were so many old Centre Morris and Taylor people there, it was like a little reunion. We ended up sitting at a table with JoeZinga, Bane, Cheeks and Elaine and Jim. I had never met Jim before. I was thoroughly impressed. I wouldn’t say I’ve never liked Elaine’s previous boyfriends, however, I’ve never been really impressed with any of them. You might ask why I even care. I don’t really have an answer to that one. After knowing Elaine through only her orthodontic pictures posted to Ben’s (her brother) door for two years, I just kinda felt like I knew her…..at least by smile with her cheeks stretched out by those plastic things. Anyways, Ben and I also lived together for a while and for some reason I’ve just always felt Elaine was like a little sister. I’m glad she’s found someone like Jim.
We actually had to cut out before the party was over because I had a 5+ hour drive home and had to get up for work the next morning. We picked up a soundtrack made by Bendog on the way out and I have to say it’s quite stellar. I’m excited for these two. Bendog’s been an amazing friend over the past 6 years or so. It’s good to see him so happy and excited. Now I just need to find some way to get him as a guest speaker on my podcast.
Saturday was a wonderful day because Liz and I met up with JRod at my current favorite pizza place. I’m almost afraid to talk about it too much because things I love tend to go out of business….DOTS, PJ’s, Castleton Arts Theater, Hollywood Bar and Filmworks, etc. So I’m kinda going out on a limb here, but Brooks Uppercrust in Marion is pretty awesome. You should check it out sometime. They have amazing breadsticks. Anyways, we met up with the JRod and got an all meat with some of their lovely breadsticks and then had lots of laughs before, during and after our food came.
If you need a movie recommendation, Hot Fuzz and 28 Weeks Later are both pretty solid. The later being much less funny than the first. If you liked 28 Days Later even just a little bit, I think it’s fair to say you’ll love the sequel.
If you’re a listen of the Lebowski Podcast, you’ll be happy to know we’re going to be recording episode 5 and it should be edited and posted this week.
