I just found out that Aaron from The Voiz has a new son! Congratulations to Aaron, Tanya and the whole family!

I just found out this morning - Guitar Hero is releasing a version of it’s game for the Nintendo DS. I have a DS Lite. I had seen other instrument games for the system and have been a little skeptical, however, it looks like this version might actually work. There’s an add-on thing that you plug into the cartridge spot(links to images on that page) on your DS for the fret buttons. It’s not coming out until this summer, but you can pre-order and get a free key-chain.
I posted my first sponsored review today. A grassroots marketing company contacted me to review an upcoming DVD release. It kinda cool to find out somebody like that likes your movie reviews. Hopefully I’ll be asked to do more in the future.
For those of you who are my friends, you should know by now how much I love the BP in the town where I live. You probably also know about my “Vote for Pedro” hat that I’ve been wearing for over 2 years now.
Recently I’ve been getting comments about the hat because it’s an election year. Apparently nobody has noticed it until now. The other day, one of the ladies at the BP made a comment about my hat and I told her it was a movie reference. Today I went in to pick up a beverage and some Boscos and that same lady said, “hey, I don’t even know your name but I thought of you the other day.”
me: Oh yeah?
lady: Yeah, I watched this crazy movie called Napoleon Dynamite and I was like - that’s what that hat means on that guy who always comes in.
me: Oh, cool.
lady: Yeah, I bet you can’t believe I hadn’t seen it yet.
So I introduced myself. It’s cool being recognized at some of your favorite local places.
Never heard of it? I hadn’t either until Kat started telling me about it the other day. In the past decade I’ve been becoming more increasingly aware of social issues and the environment. Both are things that are important to me.
I would hope that most of you know our source of oil isn’t unending. I would hope most of you also know that a lot of emissions we put into the air are bad for a lot of things. Just look at the rate of lung disease and asthma in large cities like LA.
Some people have been converting their vehicles to run on biodiesel. This is diesel fuel created from plants. Brazil kicked OPEC out a while back and is running everything on ethanol made from soybeans. This sounds good, but to really work in the long run, biodiesel needs to be made from a crop that’s not already a viable source of food or being used for some other purpose. In the US corn and soybeans have been used for this, but we already need corn and soybeans for so many other things. Where else would high fructose corn syrup come from?
This is where Kat comes in. She went to a seminar where a guy was talking about growing algae in abandoned mines to use for biodiesel. One acre of corn or soybeans produces 100 gallons of biodiesel. One acre of this algae can produce 3,500 gallons of biodiesel. It’s not like we’re needing algae for to feed our livestock or anything. Growing it underground also helps utilize abandoned spaces that aren’t being used for anything, probably already have power running to them, and can be regulated for light, water and temperature quite easily. I hope this kind of technology takes off. If you’re interested in reading some about it, here’s an article. You can also just google ‘algae biodiesel’ and see what you find.
I’ve always thought their ad campaigns were ridiculous and apparently some people that really care thought so too. I find it hilarious and am also impressed that some people still care about decency.
Saturday, Liz, Gunner and myself all drove down to Louisville to interview Scott Shuffitt and Will Russell for the podcast. These two guys are also known as the Founding Dudes for their creation of the Lebowski festivals that have been going on for 6 years with two international festivals in the UK last year.
This was definitely a big step for us on the podcast. We’ve had several guests in the past year, just not anybody really connected with the movie. We would pick a topic to explore the movie and then we’d find people who were “experts” in that field. We were joined by an English professor to talk about feminism and a Philosophy/Religion professor to talk about Dudeism for example. This time we were talking with two people that are readily know to the true Achiever, which is the self-applied term for fans of The Big Lebowski.
We weren’t really sure what to expect, but I don’t think it could have gone any better. These guys were like us, fanatical fans that aren’t too fanatical. They invited us to their tree house, otherwise known as The Lebowski Fest World Headquarters, and we sat down for a chat about the cult status of the film. We also touched on their recent book, I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski, and the festivals of course. They even gave us some posters and stickers on-the-house as we were heading out. We really appreciated both their hospitality and generosity.
Icing on the cake was just being in the great city of Louisville for the day. We got to drive around a bit more than planned, due to getting lost and streets having multiple names and sometimes no signs, but this gave us the opportunity to get an idea of our surroundings which we explored after the interview.
We ending up eating dinner at a barbeque joint called Mark’s Feed Store. Liz got a small rack of ribs while Gunner and I opted for the barbeque bacon cheeseburger with spicy fries. Some extra entertainment were the estimated 20 cops getting a bite to eat and the wait-staff’s enjoyment of them. I would highly suggest stopping by sometime if you’re hungry.
We also checked out WHY Louisville, Scott’s store, and picked up a couple copies of their book to give out as podcast prizes at a later date. Bardstown Road was an amazing part of town full of unique shops and restaurants. We’re looking forward to going back sometime in the future.
If you are using Deep Freeze or are interested in this product, I would highly suggest going with the Enterprise edition. We’ve been using it at work for the past 2 or 3 years but haven’t had the management software to go with it. We just upgraded to Enterprise over the summer and it’s saves a ton of time. Now, instead of spending 30 min to manually turn off DF in a lab I can do it with a couple clicks from my PC. You can also easily update your configuration, uninstall the software, schedule maintenance periods, restart, etc. There’s also the ability to create custom groups so you can break your machines into labs, buildings, etc instead of having a long list of all your machines.
If you have different VLANs you’ll want to make sure you setup your configuration files correctly. In the Advanced tab there are some network settings. If everything is on one VLAN, you can use the LAN setting. If you’re using multiple VLANs you’ll want to use the LAN/WAN setting. The last step is to input the IP address or name of the computer hosting the management software. If you’ve installed that on a server or have static IPs, then input the IP address. If you have dynamic IP addresses like we do, just input the name of the computer so it doesn’t matter what port you’re plugged in to.
Last weekend was our super wedding weekend with a total of three we were wanting to attend. Unfortunately, we only made it to two of them; one being in Muncie and the other simultaneously in Chicago. The first wedding was some friends of ours from church - Sera and Elliot. That was fun. During the reception Matt, Weber and I discussed some Guitar Hero strategy.
Wedding number 2 was long-awaited and much-anticipated being it was the one and only Bendog and Jodi. Bendog was one of the many Ben’s involved in my wedding as well as another illustrious member of the fabled SammyII crowd. It was a little hot outside during the actual ceremony, but we were soon ushered inside to the sweet embrace of central air.
There were so many old Centre Morris and Taylor people there, it was like a little reunion. We ended up sitting at a table with JoeZinga, Bane, Cheeks and Elaine and Jim. I had never met Jim before. I was thoroughly impressed. I wouldn’t say I’ve never liked Elaine’s previous boyfriends, however, I’ve never been really impressed with any of them. You might ask why I even care. I don’t really have an answer to that one. After knowing Elaine through only her orthodontic pictures posted to Ben’s (her brother) door for two years, I just kinda felt like I knew her…..at least by smile with her cheeks stretched out by those plastic things. Anyways, Ben and I also lived together for a while and for some reason I’ve just always felt Elaine was like a little sister. I’m glad she’s found someone like Jim.
We actually had to cut out before the party was over because I had a 5+ hour drive home and had to get up for work the next morning. We picked up a soundtrack made by Bendog on the way out and I have to say it’s quite stellar. I’m excited for these two. Bendog’s been an amazing friend over the past 6 years or so. It’s good to see him so happy and excited. Now I just need to find some way to get him as a guest speaker on my podcast.
I think I’ve probably talked on here before about how much I love the BP gas station here in town. The people are cool. The food is awesome. They listen and actually talk to you when you’re in there….and I just like them. Today Liz and I had been out walking for a good hour and we stopped at the BP to get something to drink. I soon found out my wallet was not in my pants and I felt pretty stupid up at the counter with my fountain drink. The person there was like, “that’s ok. just come back and pay for it.” So I did. I got to walk the 9 or so blocks home with a refreshing beverage and then hoofed it back to deliver my 74 cents.
