Blogging tip to all of you bloggers out there: Think about categorizing before you have hundreds of posts.
Now, you might notice the categorizing/tagging on this blog is abysmal. I have no excuses for that. It’s just something I’ve been quite lazy about, however, I’ve recently finished categorizing and tagging all of my posts on my movie blog. I’ve been working on it periodically over the past several months. I’ve categorized movie reviews by movie genres and keywords and then I’ve tagged them by directors, writers, and actors.
This isn’t normally how you would tag and categorize posts because you usually want much more broad and overarching categories. It’s a bit different in this case because these are movies and I’m trying to plan ahead for films with the same themes and what-have-you.
Also, if you haven’t upgraded to Wordpress 2.5, I highly suggest you do. It’s so, so, so, so much better than 2.2 or 2.3.
I finally just did a manual install/upgrade of Wordpress on the movie blog and everything is peachy now. I really like to in-house plug-in updater. You just have to supply it with some ftp credentials.
I also wrote a post on bloggingamigos about it.
So the updater didn’t work and I was having problems figuring out what went wrong. Then Soulman showed up and helped me over his lunch hour. What happened is a couple files were somehow truncated and no new files seem to have been copied. So my blog works now and was never really upgraded. Maybe I’ll do a manual upgrade later today if I have time.
Well, I think either the database got weird, some files got weird, or a combination of both. There seem to be two sets of tables in my database which is really weird. Luckily Soulman a.ka. - The Cavalry - is trying to help me out. I’ll definitely have a “nice” post about this updater on BloggingAmigos when this is all through.
Tara used the automatic upgrade plugin for Wordpress on some blogs and didn’t have any problems. The exact same didn’t happen for me. I tried to do it on this blog and ran into a bunch of problems so I then tried to do it on the movie blog and ran into the exact same problems. So I did some research, read a few things, and then changed some file permissions. Well, it got farther in the “upgrade”, but now nothing works at all. This is what I posted on the Wordpress.org forums. I would greatly appreciate any help.
I tried to use the automatic upgrader to go from 2.3.2 to 2.5 and was having a lot of problems with file permissions. I was reading some comments on the creator’s site and it said to try a recursive chmod to change permissions on some stuff. So I tried that and it was able to get past setting the blog into maintenance mode and what not. Well right before I got to the point where it would upgrade my database I got several pages of errors all similar to this, for what I’m guessing is every file:
Warning: copy(/home/chalupa/public_html/movies/wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/chalupa/public_html/movies/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wpau_upgrade.class.php on line 181
So now if I try to go to my blog or my dashboard I get this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function require_wp_db() in /home/chalupa/public_html/movies/wp-settings.php on line 206
I’m guessing some of the files were upgraded and some were not? I’m also guessing my database hasn’t been upgraded yet. I did the auto-backup procedure with the plugin and saved those files. I’m not exactly sure what I need to do to replace those. Currently my computer won’t let me even see what’s in them because it has deemed them as “unsafe”. Should I just talk to my webhost and have them roll back to last week’s backup? I would greatly appreciate any help.
I posted my first sponsored review today. A grassroots marketing company contacted me to review an upcoming DVD release. It kinda cool to find out somebody like that likes your movie reviews. Hopefully I’ll be asked to do more in the future.
I’ve been using this plugin for a short while and just saw this article on Wordpress.com saying it’s been banned. The date is also 8 months old. Now it seems to me like the people having problems were probably doing some fishy things. I’m considering looking for a new plugin to use, but will probably keep using it. In the meantime here are some tips.
See? Now Google knows about your site and you shouldn’t have problems with banned content or something. You also shouldn’t be giving out your Adsense account numbers or posting ads on sites that you don’t have complete control over. Pretty simple. Don’t be stupid.
I’ve been kinda out of it for a while. My lungs quit working for a few days again. I really need to get a new pair. I’ve been doing a lot of work on the movie blog; writing reviews and retroactively categorizing is a lot of work. I think I just finished up through June of 2005 last night.
If you have Netflix you might want to check out their on-demand viewing. I looked at it when it first came out and there were maybe 20-30 titles for each genre and absolutely nothing I wanted to watch or hadn’t seen already. I’ve been watching a few over the past couple days though and the selection has been greatly increased. There are even 2007 films you can watch. You can even watch as much as you please. When it first started you were allowed X amount of films or maybe there was a time limit. I don’t really remember.
Smitty had an idea a long time ago about creating a shared blog where us techie-people could share our experiences about blogging and it’s many facets. I thought this was a great idea and we’re now in the process of setting things up.
I have a tendency to work on things until they’re functional and then quit. This is why I have many unused plugins installed or in use that don’t do much or are cluttering things up. Setting up this new blog has re-invigorated me to start making some changes to things. If you haven’t seen my movie blog then you might not notice the changes. I imported it from Blogger to Wordpress about a month ago and tonight I changed the theme to K2 and have been changing some of the plugins and modifying a few other things. The long term goal is to update the look of this blog too.
If you’re looking to do some podcasting with Wordpress, I’d highly suggest checking out the PodPress plugin for podcasting. It will insert a player into your posts, keep track of stats, options for iTunes and other podcast directories, setup a separate RSS feed, and many, many other settings you can mess with. I’ve started using it on my movie blog for the audio reviews we’ve started using.
