I just saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It was kind of a depressing movie. I liked it a lot, but it was a bit of a downer. Makes me think of the Alice Cooper song.

We just got back from an extended weekend trip to New Hampshire a couple days ago. I say, “extended” because it’s about 1,000 miles to drive there and that takes a while no matter how you try to get there. We’re going to be moving there at some point this summer. Not quite sure exactly when yet. That all depends on several factors. Having lived in Arizona and the Midwest my whole life, I’ve decided to come up with some pros and cons of moving to the Northeast part of my country.
Pros:
- History and lots of it
- Lots of cool, old places to see
- Atlantic Ocean
- Seafood
- It’s something new
- No more Midwest allergens
- No sales or income tax in NH
- Public transportation
- I saw a hotdog stand in a trolley car in an alley
- Lots of pizza joints
Cons:
- When restaurants offer Coke products that means Coke, Diet-Coke, and Sprite.
- Some people talk in funny accents
- Roundabouts or “traffic circles” as they call them
- Lots of tolls on almost every interstate
- Exits and mile markers on the roads don’t make sense
- Can’t pump your own gas in New Jersey
- Some guy thinks I’m Jay
Yeah….so apparently some guy thinks I’m Jay from work. We ran into each other in downtown Portsmouth. I then saw him the next day on UNH’s campus. Quite an interesting encounter. Even though I couldn’t get a Mr. Pibb, Dr. P, Mellow Yellow or Mt. Dew at an eatery, I can at least still purchase them elsewhere. It’ll probably be a little harder to acquire Ale8 though.
So Liz and I are going to be moving, date to be determined, this summer. This may not sound like a huge deal, except I’ve been trying to get some things in order at work. I’ll be finishing up my 9th year of working there. First four years were as a student worker, 5th year was a full-time student-employee supervisor, and the last four years have been full-time hourly. There are a lot of things I do that nobody else has ever touched. Writing out instructions, tips, and what-have-you can be a daunting task.
This weekend we’re making a 1,000 mile trek so Liz can do a campus visit, we can look at some possible places to live, network with some people, and so I can go to what I’m interpreting as a pseudo-interview. On top of all this, I’ve been trying to schedule a phone call interview for a fund raiser with some fellow Achievers who obviously aren’t millennials. Even though I’m not from that generation, I sometimes forget that some people don’t have three email accounts open all day, a cell phone in their pocket, and several chat programs at their fingertips.
So with the finalization of a two year educational technology Lilly grant, a Second Life presentation, podcasting, blogging, and life…I now have a day to make sure I’m ready for a road trip. I usually work well under pressure though so things should work out.
Ever watch a commercial and you’re dying to know what that song was? I’ve been trying to figure out why I know the song from the new Dodge Journey commercial. I thought it kinda sounded like Weezer or Ozma, but didn’t think that’s who it was. Just found out it’s AM180 by Grandaddy. It’s also on the 28 Days Later soundtrack. Good song and a good movie. You should check both of them out.
We got access to Second Life up and running for the presentation and it went pretty well. We had a lot of good discussion amongst the staff and faculty present. We also got some pretty awesome box lunches and I was able to bring back an extra for a snack I’m currently enjoying.
Gary and I have been working on a presentation to faculty about the educational uses and potential of Second Life. The presentation is tomorrow and as of this morning our internet filter is blocking Second Life.
My buddy Solomon, from the Education department, and I head over to the local Taco Bell every once in a while to grab some lunch. I’ve known Solomon goes over there a lot more often than I do, but I found out today just how often. Today was my turn for buying and as we’re ordering I saw a manager/supervisor in the back making orders to help out during the lunch rush. She saw Solomon and he waved. She then started yelling something to the cashier. I didn’t understand what she said, but it ended in me getting a 10% discount.
It’s coming, it’s coming!
First however, I must bring your attention to a new Wii game, or should I see wee-ing game. Jeremy assures me this is just an April fools joke, but I wouldn’t put it past our friends in Japan to create something like this.
Now, back to the good stuff. Battlestar Galactica Season 4 premieres tonight at 10pm EST. If you’d like to catch up and you have been watching the marathons on Sci-Fi from 8am to 6pm every day this week along with the season 3 episodes from 1am-3am……you can catch the last two episodes of season 3 at 8pm EST tonight, before the new episode.
I know there has been some grumbling about the past season sucking. I have to totally disagree. It seems like I heard at least one person say every show was going downhill with the writers strike. I’m a big fan of BSG and thoroughly enjoyed every episode. Robby’s coming over tonight to take in all the Battlestar goodness. It’s too bad this will already be the last season, but at least they’re sticking to a plan. The whole point is to find the planet Earth, which was also the original plot in the original series*. They’re going to find Earth by the end of the season so there’s really no point in keeping on once the originally stated goal has been reached and I applaud them for it.
* Yes, this show is a re-make if you weren’t aware. There have even been some guest appearances by actors from the original show.
About a week ago we decided we’re going to be moving to New Hampshire for the fall. Liz had applied to a handful of MFA programs and has chosen to go to UNH. So I’ve started the process of looking into possible academic technology positions in the area. Today I found the department website and some contact information for the equivalent of what I do at TU. I worked on an email for a couple of hours along with a little research of their website and what they do. I had about 5 people take a glance at what I had written up and got some input on things to add and change. So I sent off the email and 19 min later I got a reply. They don’t have any current job openings, I knew that because I’ve been checking the available jobs for the university, but she would like to meet with me when we’re on campus in a couple of weeks. Booyah!
I just found out that Aaron from The Voiz has a new son! Congratulations to Aaron, Tanya and the whole family!
