Dewey, el perrito

As many of you know, Liz and I have been fostering a beagle-ish dog that Liz named Dewey after the well known Dewey Finn, the temp, of School of Rock fame.  Dewey was chucked out of a moving truck into the yard of some people that were standing there when it happened.  Not too smart if you ask me.  Our neighbor’s daughter works with local animal shelters, rescuing animals and placing them into good homes.  That’s how we got Dewey.

Liz had been saying she was wanting a dog for a while and I told her I thought it wasn’t a very good idea for several reasons…money, no space, time constraints and responsibilities, etc.   So, we kinda compromised and got Dewey on a temp basis instead.

At first Dewey was pretty scared and very cautious.  Luckily we’ve won him over and have even taught him a few tricks.  He loves just being around us and is pretty chill.  He definitely likes Liz the best.  With the exception of actually sitting on her lap, I’d say he was Liz’s lapdog.  When she’s working from home he’ll sit at her feet all day and follows her into every room she goes.  It’s kind of funny.  I think the best part is that he drags these old t-shirts out of his crate, he didn’t have a blanket or towel so we used some old shirts, puts them in a pile, and then lays his head on them like it’s his pillow.

Dewey now has a home.  A friend of Liz’s from Indy has signed the paperwork and everything.  We’re just going to keep him for another week until he gets back from his holiday travels.  Liz asked if I’d be sad to see him go.  I really don’t know.  We gave him back to our neighbor’s daughter when we were gone last week.  I have to admit I didn’t really think of him.  I do enjoy dogs and having one around, I just don’t feel like I have the time and energy to really take care of one at this point.  We also don’t really have the space in our apartment for him either and we aren’t exactly to the point that we can just let him roam free.

Post-Christmas purchase

I just bought an Olympus DS-40 and the TP-7. The DS-40 is a digital voice recorder with a higher-end mic on it for recording podcasts. The TP-7 is a mic specially made for recording phone calls on both land-line and cell phones. I’ve been borrowing an Olympus WS-320M from work to record podcast episodes. It works ok, but the mic isn’t that great. It does have 1GB of storage on it, but it’s not like you’d use it as a flash drive. I was looking at the WS-331m because it had 2GB of storage and was a step up for the 320M, however, it was still the lower-grade recorder series.

I ha kicked around the idea of getting an iPod with a microphone attachment, but I read several reviews that were saying recording just sucked the juice out of the battery. So much that they died after anywhere between 1-1.5hrs of use.

I’m really hoping this’ll ship tomorrow before the 1st. I’ll try to remember to post a review after I try it out. If it works well, we’ll definitely be using this in our January episode.

Folding category plugin

Just found what I’ve been looking for.  A plugin to expand/hide my categories.  I’m not using it here, it’s on my Movie blog.  Here’s the site for where I got it from.  One nice feature is that it actually works with Wordpress 2.3.2.  Now I just have to categorize a couple hundred posts.

Sunshine

Can’t say I’ve seen as much sunshine as in the movie of said name, but I am getting more sunshine here in Florida than I would be getting in Indiana.  We’re down here with Liz’s family right now at their condo - living it up and watching copious amounts of Battlestar Galactica.  Rajeev hadn’t ever seen it before so he’s being inundated.

Other than a few bug bites, we’ve been having a good time.  I’ve been able to hit the little gym here every day along with a little pool time as well.  We even went out and saw Sweeney Todd.  Liz, Phil and I loved it, but the rest of the crowd didn’t like it quite as much.  Speaking of that, I need to write up a review.

Migrating blogs

This weekend I’ve been working on migrating my other blogs to Wordpress. I migrated this blog about a year ago, tested some things out, but then wasn’t able to migrate the others. Turned out I was finally forced to update to the Beta Blogger or Blogger 2 and Wordpress didn’t have an importer yet. Well, I’m finally getting around to doing it again. I’m not sure what I’ll do for templates or color schemes - I usually go for something as simple as possible. I might even make a portal-ish page on the root of my domain to take you to the different blogs.

I know I’ve posted this links in previous posts, but if you’re interested in doing this yourself there’s a good tutorial here and some instructions on maintaining permalinks here.

Front door update

Well, it’s been 24hrs and we now have a door that shuts easily, seals and doesn’t let it a breeze of cold air that can be felt on the other side of the room.  What can I say?  The Dude Abides.

Being the man for your time and place

Sometimes it takes certain circumstances, skills or people to get things done. If you need to put out a fire you might need a fireman. If you need your neighbors to shut up you might need a policeman. If you want fly around the city using spiderwebs you might need to be Spiderman and if you want your rug back - and I do mean a rug that ties the room together - you might need The Dude.

A lot of you know about how our last apartment ended with the great flood of 2007.  That wasn’t a much of fun.   We’ve been living in a new place that’s definitely better in a variety of ways.  When we applied to live here, the owner seemed all impressed about Liz’s maiden name and some family connections and Liz has just communicated with him since we’ve moved in.  There have been several issues with things in the apartment and at first they were fixed quite promptly.

Then there was a new maintenance guy that wasn’t necessarily real reliable about communicating and what not.  We then found out he was originally hired as just the lawn guy and the main maintenance person was gone or something.  Well the new guy is back and after weeks and weeks of bugging the temp, we got the main person to look at our front door which happens to be too big for the frame and leaks a lot of air.  Well, that was about it.  It was looked at, but nothing’s happened.

So this afternoon I sent an email to our friendly landlord.  I received a response within a couple hours and after we got home, the maintenance guy called us up asking if we’d be around tomorrow.  He’s coming by in the morning, he just has a show he needs to watch first.  Liz was pretty surprised at the response to my request.  I just told her I was the just the right man for this particular time and place.

Take that skinny people

Recent studies have shown that being “overweight” isn’t so bad. I put “overweight” in quotations because there are a lot of ways people try to measure that amongst the population and i don’t always agree with those findings. According to height and weight charts, I should weight about 150-160lbs. I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Lunchtime woes

You know how sometimes you’re just having one of those days and you’re looking forward to something good to eat?  Well I didn’t get to take off for some lunch until about 2:15 today and I went home to make myself a nice sandwich.  I got out the bread.  I applied ample portions of mayo and mustard.  I went to get out that ham or turkey or whatever it was……to find there was no thinly sliced deli meats to choose from.  I had eaten all of it.  So what do my wandering eyes rest on?  None other than old reliable.  Oscar Meyer wieners.

I deftly slid two out of the plastic, cut them in half, applied cheese and pickles to my sandwich, microwaved my concoction, topped everything off with a hefty serving of ketchup* and it was delicious.  A delicious, tangy hotdog sandwich.  What more could I have asked for?

*If you don’t know how much ketchup constitutes a hefty serving, I’m sure Tara could help you out.

Future article

Looks like the Echo, student-run newspaper at Taylor University, will be doing a story on our podcast first issue of second semester.  They’ll be covering our anniversary episode in January.
