Al Gore’s taking away my medicine

Well, not really, but it sounds kinda fun to blame him for something like that. For all of you that have asthma out there I’m pretty sure you know what albuterol is. It’s a drug that’s used in many fast-action inhalers. Many of the inhalers people use contain CFCs to propel the medicine into their lungs. Since CFCs are being banned in other places, why not inhalers? This doesn’t seem like a big deal, right?

The alternative seems to be marginal at best; at least from what I’m reading. They clog up easily, taste funny, don’t produce the same results and can cost up to four times as much.

The deadline for pulling all CFC inhalers off the shelves is supposed to be December of 2008. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Awake

Liz and I finally made it to Iowa tonight. Had a lot of rain and then some snow to drive through. Luckily we made it safely. There were a lot of dumb people out on the road today - including black vehicles without their lights on.

Right now it’s about 1:15am Iowa time which would make it 2:15am Indiana time. Everybody else is asleep except for me. Haven’t been sleeping much lately. I was doing great until 2 weeks ago Tuesday when the asthma got the best of me again due to the incessant leaf burning that’s been happening in my town. I’m on lots of medicine which makes my lungs work marginally well, but I don’t sleep or eat much. So once again I’m on my super-asthma-weight-loss-program and I’ve been able to catch many sub-par movies on TV in the 11pm-4am range. I’m hoping my lungs just get better soon and that I don’t get pneumonia or anything. That wouldn’t be much fun at all.

The plan is to hang out with Josh and Erin on Saturday. Other than that, lots of relaxing, playing guitar hero and eating some wonderful mexican food. Happy Thanksgiving!

Audacity tip

I’ve been trying to use Audacity, a few audio editing program, lately to edit my podcast. I had been doing all of the editing with Adobe Audition at work, but really wanted to just do it from the comfort of my own office chair.

It’s a pretty nice program and you can’t really argue with the price. One thing I was frustrated with though is some of my audio clips were sounding all warbly and degraded after I exported my project as an MP3. I finally figured out what was happening. Most of my clips were recorded in mono. A couple of clips I imported were stereo. After I split those stereo tracks and deleted a channel, then the warbling disappeared. Another thing I was playing around with was the bit-rate and sample rate. That can also make a difference, but definitely split your stereo tracks into mono if you’re doing multi-track editing.

My teeth like me

Unlike Liz, my teeth and I have a good relationship. They’re strong and allow me to take large bites of food, masticate them thoroughly and magically make the food disappear from my plate.

Today I went to the dentist for the second time since I started up my regular visits again this year.  The word “wow” was repeated several times, but not in reference to an almost emergency root canal.  They kept saying I have perfect teeth.  I brush daily.  I floss maybe once a month if I think to.  I drink way too much pop (it keeps me from shaking when I’m hopped up on asthma drugs) and I never try to keep that bar behind my bottom teeth cleaned.  It must have good teeth genes.

The only complaint I have is that the lady that has cleaned my teeth these past two times is a compulsive talker.  How am I really supposed to respond with your hands in my mouth?

New Documentaries

If you liked Super Size Me, then I think I found a couple trailers you might be interested in. The first would be King Corn, a documentary about how dependent the US is on this vegetable. Have you ever looked on the back of a food label and seen High Fructose Corn Syrup?

The second is called What Would Jesus Buy? and is a documentary about consumerism around the holidays, mainly Christmas, in the US.  This one happens to be produced by Morgan Spurlock, actor and director from Super Size Me.

Severe Weather Warning: Your hat might blow away

I keep getting these pop-ups today about severe weather.  When I see that I’m thinking hail, tornado, blizzard, etc.  Well today it happens to be strong winds gusting up to 45mph.  Well, I’ve been walking around campus between buildings here at work today and I keep thinking of the movie Miller’s Crossing when the main character keeps having these dreams of his hat blowing away.  I haven’t seen anybody chasing after a hat yet, but it’s a definite possibility.

Liz on having kids

Yeah, I don’t think I want to have kids just yet because that would mess up my sleeping schedule.

My response:
Well, if that’s the case then I don’t think we’ll ever have kids cause I know how much you like your sleep.
