Tomorrow Liz and I are heading out for a little trip to a place they call Mexico. So you probably won’t hear from either of us for a while unless we find some internet access while we’re away.
Podcast is coming along. Lofton and maybe Gunner will be posting some updates while we’re away. I hope you all can take er easy and until next time, The Dude Abides.
We busted out two more short clips for the podcast today. We had some major scheduling problems this time around - some of them due to some quite tragic circumstance. We got things figured out though. Gunner, Liz and myself recorded an intro, promo-clip and then Liz and I did Episode 8 - Uli Kunkel Edition. I’m glad we were able to get something done since we’re heading to Mexico at the end of the week.
I used to live in an apartment building called Briarwood. I loved living there and had a very good relationship with the owners. Fast forward a couple years to when the owners have decided to semi-retire, sell the building and spend more time with their kids…
I couldn’t really stand the new owners or their building manager. As you probably already know, I had many problems and issues. I tried to take care of them in a respectful and professional manner, but things didn’t really work out. Then, due to some negligence in snow removal my apartment flooded. They knew it could happen, but were just crossing their fingers that it wouldn’t. I say this because that’s what the building manager told me. The flooding resulted in our apartment molding over and after being home for about an hour the next day I ended up in the ER and missing a month of work.
I was pretty pissed off about this. That happened at the end of February and it’s now almost September. I’m not back to 100% yet. After even more drama, we finally moved out of there. The owner said we shouldn’t be able to get out of the lease and the lease didn’t apply to me because I had “pre-exising medical conditions.” You may also remember my asthma doctor declaring that “bullshit“. We talked to the county and the health department and this information is what I think “scared” the owner into somewhat compromising with us. I kept saying I was going to type up a big rant and try and discourage everybody from living there and doing business with these people. Sort of like what I did when that tux shop screwed me over. I decided against it and don’t really regret it.
Fast-forward to today when I found out Briarwood has been recently sold. I wasn’t really surprised and I found it kinda funny. Yes, I’m taking pleasure in someone else’s misfortune. Am I a bad person? Maybe…but I’m ok with it. I had to immediately text Liz and inform her of this new information that had come to light. Supposedly the new owners, I have no idea who they are, are taking a personal interest in their investment like the owners I had when originally. It’s amazing how people can buy a thriving business, run it into the ground and ruin its reputation so quickly.
I’m so glad I switched to my own Wordpress installation on my own server. Any Blogger blog I’ve tried to go to today returns a 502. Come on Google. You have customers that are needing to use your free blogging service.
Liz and I will be off soon to go see a new movie that has come out by the name of Superbad. I got all excited for Hot Fuzz in the spring and wasn’t disappointed one bit. Then Apatow had Knocked Up, my current favorite movie of the summer. I don’t really know which one is my favorite of the year, however, Lofton has assured me that Superbad will take the cake. I’ll be sure to report back with a review when we get back.
Day 2 is over for the 5th annual Technology for Teaching conference. My first class was a bit of a bust with network and server problems. I was teaching a class about using webcams. The cameras weren’t working, Skype wasn’t working, etc, etc. I totally had a Dr. Toll moment cause it worked in my office!
The podcasting session went a bit better. Afterwards Quinn noticed that it was all business people instead of profs. That was ok though. We both got to highlight our pet projects a big and talk about our experiences. I think it went pretty well.
Today’s day one of the 5th annual Technology for Teaching conference at work. I’m teaching 3 classes today and am currently sitting in Rukshan’s blogging class. In the previous hour I taught my first class on Irfanview and using the Photo Album feature of PowerPoint. I also sat-in/helped with a couple Turning Point classes. AJ, from TP, drove up and taught one of the sessions. He also saved our bacon by letting us use his laptop when the computer in the room needed an update to work. Tomorrow I’ll be teaching two more classes; one will be on using webcams in the classroom and the second will be on podcasting.
The podcasting session is something I’ve been looking forward to and actually started creating the presentation materials for it a few months ago. Quinn from the education department will be “riding side-car” with me and will talk a little bit about a podcast he does with an elementary book club. I’ll be highlighting the Lebowski Podcast of course.
Getting ready for this conference is always a lot of work coupled with a few stressful days. However, once we actually get to these two days in the summer, they’re pretty enjoyable.
I had been putting this off for quite some time. Months to be exact. Turns out, it hardly took any time at all. If you need to upgrade your Wordpress installation, just go here.
There’s three easy steps:
- Backup your database
- Pretty easy if you use phpMyAdmin
- Backup the files from your web space
- Install the upgrade
That’s about it. The longest part was backing up my files. I had to pass the time by making a sandwich and eating it.
Today at my weekly Subway lunch something awesome happened. The most-amazing-Subway-lady-ever remembered the bread I like and what I wanted without having to ask me first. Have I finally become a “regular” again somewhere? I guess time will tell on this one.
Stuff is crazy right now. When I’m not busy trying to get things ready to go at work, I’m trying to get just normal stuff accomplished, or I’m working on my website. If you’re a frequent visitor you might have noticed some things like our new blog, subscription counter, donation module and many other content updates. This kind of stuff is a lot of hard work. Timmah has recently offered to take over the Facebook group and I’ll be getting some help in other areas too. For now though, it’s back to work.
