I scored a replica of the Time Magazine mirror from The Big Lebowski on Ebay today. I’m pretty stoked. It will look quite nicely on my wall - especially after I pick up Erik Rose’s three pieces as well. Combine that with my Italian movie poster for the film and I think it will be pretty much perfect.

As many of you know, The Big Lebowski is one of my favorite movies. Since I started up the podcast, I’ve been working to make myself a little bit more knowledgeable about the movie and its creators to maybe sound a little bit more intelligent when people tune in. My most recent accomplishment has been finishing The Coen Brothers by Ronald Bergan. This was the first officially sanctioned biography about the writers and directors of the film, Joel and Ethan Coen.
For those of you who are strictly Lebowski fans, this may not be the book for you because most of it is about Joel and Ethan, and their previous six films. If you’d like to learn a little more about their childhood, families and professional life this would be something good to pick up. It was interesting to learn a little bit more about Blood Simple, Barton Fink, Miller’s Crossing, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo. I can’t say I’ve even seen them more than twice, if that. Some I like better than others, but above all, understanding their work as a whole helps you to understand any one piece of their art.
I’ve now started on The Big Lebowski: The Making of a Coen Brother Film. This one is a bit more interesting to me since it deals completely with favorite film of theirs. I’ll let you know all about it after I finish it.
That’s what Sara’s been referring to it as for the past couple months. Well, it finally happened. Last night I made some refried beans, rice, cheese sauce, flautas and sopapillas. Had a few friends over too. It’s something we’ve been going to do for a while, but since Becky was here and she wanted me to make some stuff, it all kinda worked out. It was a lot of fun. We even rounded off the night with some more guitar action. Becky’s pretty good at it for never playing before.
For all of you Mighty Ducks fans out there, movies not the franchise, I’m sure you recognized the reference to the “other” goalie. If you’re not quite sure who I’m talking about, here’s a link to her IMDB page - Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine.
Now fast forward to today. Liz and I have been watching a show on the Food Network called “The Next Food Network Star”. When I saw the first episode I immediately thought, “Colombe looks just like that goalie from Maine in the Mighty Ducks movies. She looked like her and sounded like her. I told myself that couldn’t be her though because these are all just ‘average joes’ trying to get their own cooking show. Well last night we watched the finale and found out that Amy, as we had hoped, was the winner. Becky, who has been visiting, immediately noticed Colombe. So I had to look it up and as I had originally thought, it was her. It’s weird to think that people my age are on TV competing for their own cooking show. I guess that means I’m getting old.
I haven’t been on here much lately. Most of that’s cause I kinda got sick again due to some environmental changes at work. At the start I was pretty annoyed with it, but I’m cool now. It’s frustrating to finally be back to normal though and then get set back. My biggest lament is the inability to attend the 6th annual Lebowski Fest. I’ve been wanting to go since the 2nd annual festival and just haven’t made it down to Louisville yet. Liz was set to go with me too. We even have two tickets sitting at home. To top it off, Will Russell and Scott Shuffitt were going to do an interview for the podcast. I’m hoping to still hook up with them sometime for the interview. I could always drive down to Louisville for the weekend or something.
Bendog can’t make it either, nor the great T.C. Lofton for that matter. To comfort myself I had to fire up The Big Lebowski on Wednesday and will be watching it again over the weekend. I’m also sporting one of my Lebowski Podcast shirts.

[15:48] Me: i wish i had a kegerator with ale8 in it
Last weekend was our super wedding weekend with a total of three we were wanting to attend. Unfortunately, we only made it to two of them; one being in Muncie and the other simultaneously in Chicago. The first wedding was some friends of ours from church - Sera and Elliot. That was fun. During the reception Matt, Weber and I discussed some Guitar Hero strategy.
Wedding number 2 was long-awaited and much-anticipated being it was the one and only Bendog and Jodi. Bendog was one of the many Ben’s involved in my wedding as well as another illustrious member of the fabled SammyII crowd. It was a little hot outside during the actual ceremony, but we were soon ushered inside to the sweet embrace of central air.
There were so many old Centre Morris and Taylor people there, it was like a little reunion. We ended up sitting at a table with JoeZinga, Bane, Cheeks and Elaine and Jim. I had never met Jim before. I was thoroughly impressed. I wouldn’t say I’ve never liked Elaine’s previous boyfriends, however, I’ve never been really impressed with any of them. You might ask why I even care. I don’t really have an answer to that one. After knowing Elaine through only her orthodontic pictures posted to Ben’s (her brother) door for two years, I just kinda felt like I knew her…..at least by smile with her cheeks stretched out by those plastic things. Anyways, Ben and I also lived together for a while and for some reason I’ve just always felt Elaine was like a little sister. I’m glad she’s found someone like Jim.
We actually had to cut out before the party was over because I had a 5+ hour drive home and had to get up for work the next morning. We picked up a soundtrack made by Bendog on the way out and I have to say it’s quite stellar. I’m excited for these two. Bendog’s been an amazing friend over the past 6 years or so. It’s good to see him so happy and excited. Now I just need to find some way to get him as a guest speaker on my podcast.
Yesterday, to celebrate the 4th…obviously, Soulman and I rocked out 2-player on Guitar Hero. We were checking around and nobody seems to rent the guitars for PS2, only X-Box. So I picked up another guitar. The used place was selling them for the same price as I could go buy a brand new one, so the decision didn’t really have to be made. I think the investment will be well worth it.
Yesterday at church Matt had us write down something in our lives we’ve been hiding from people and/or something that’s been kinda just weighing us down. Then we put those pieces of paper into a paper shredder. There were three of them all going at once. Kind of noisy. Kind of uplifting. Thinking about it afterwards I thought it was pretty cool. I’ve been in services before where they ask you to write down something on a piece of paper and then nail it to a cross. I’ve never really been into that. I know the symbolism of it is important and everything. Shredding up something that I need to let go of or start changing in my life just struck a chord within me. It was, in a sense, a new beginning or a starting point. I’d just like to say, “Way to go” to Matt or Adam or whoever it was that came up with it. I really liked it.
So Saturday afternoon I picked up Guitar Hero II and a PS2. I beat the game on Easy Saturday and yesterday I beat the game on Medium. It’s pretty fun and a little addicting. Liz has even started playing. It kinda reminds me of when I used to play my clarinet as far as finger work goes. It’s also fun to play a lot of the songs blind. By blind I mean not having seen the music before. Reminds me of when Matt and I would improv all the songs in pep band by jumping octaves, adding notes and what not.
