I just called the city to see if there’s an ordinance about snow removal. Unfortunately, no luck there.

You might remember back in the summer when I wrote a letter to the owners of my apartment building. A little while later something finally got done. Well, recently with the blizzard, things have been grossly neglected. After several calls to Jim, the manager, and Kyle, the owner, I’ve learned a few things.
- Jim has never heard of a multiple-page lease and thinks it’s a good idea to create one
- Kyle assures me everybody has a 4-page lease outlining everything
- Kyle says I’m the only one that complains and nobody else calls him
- After talking to 7 other tenants last night, nobody knows who Kyle is, nobody has Kyle’s number and nobody has a 4-page lease
Interesting huh? The only reason I have a page of contact numbers is because I received it from Tom, previous owner, right before they sold the building. I’ve also held off on contacting Kyle until recently because Jim is always saying not to bother them with anything.
If you ask me, it sounds like Jim is scamming everybody. So last night Liz and I talked to a few of our fellow tenants and will be trying to talk to the rest over the weekend.
We finally got some snow here. It’s the most snow I’ve seen here since I’ve been in college. Nothing too bad compared to what we’d get in Iowa, but it’s still a lot of snow.
Pro’s of being snowed in:
- No work for two days
- Watch lots of movies
- Watch lots of X-Files
- Conquer the world in Civ 4
Con’s of being snowed in:
- Building manager not doing anything constructive to get the snow removed
Did you see all those lovely things about being snowed in? And did you notice the negative? This is day three. They finally plowed last night but didn’t inform anybody when it was happening. That means all of our cars are now plowed in. Also, that 4′ drift is still in front of our door impeding any exiting. I’m getting tired of making phone calls cause nothing is happening.
Hopped on Myspace today and saw a picture Kristi had dug out from somewhere. I can’t say I remember that picture at all. Not like that means something, but a lot of times when I look at a picture I can remember some sort of context of when it was taken.
In other news, White Castle is taking Valentine’s Day reservations. They have tables all decked out with table cloths and candles. They’re taking dinner reservations and they have have Cupid’s Crave Cases. Personally, I’d love to have some White Castle in a formal setting, but Liz isn’t too crazy about that awesome burger joint.
Here’s a few shots of my new machine. I don’t have any pictures of the case with the sides on yet. I forgot to take any. The first two are of my video card. The heatpipe takes up a lot of room, but it really cuts down on the noise factor.
The rest are just shots of my case. There’s one minus drives and another with everything in it. I also have a shot of the back side and an up close of the cable hiding spot. The one with everything in it isn’t quite accurate because I put my Audigy in there and have since taken in out. I’m going to give me onboard audio a shot at wowing me. I also scrapped the audio cables from the DVD drives to the sound card. That’s a couple less things to get in the way.
Last night after getting home from work, I was starving. Two hot dogs later, I was jonesing for some nachos. So I got a saucepan, some velveeta, the rest of some grated pepperjack and the shredded lemon-pepper chicken left-overs from when I made flautas. I put the chicken and the velveeta in the pan, heated it up a bit and then added what Iron Chef would call THE SECRET INGREDIENT OF THE DAY. Well today ingredient was heavy whipping cream. Heavy cream makes a lot of things taste good. It’s basically fat and who doesn’t like fat? So I put in the cream, let it melt a bit, added the pepperjack and then more cream. When you do this sort of thing you can’t have the heat too high and you need to be stirring a lot. The end result is a party in your mouth.
I installed an old OS last night, a few drivers and Civ 4 that came with my video card. The computer runs awesomely well. I like it a lot.
In other news….it’s freaking cold outside. Getting up to go work out in the morning make for cold mornings. I also just got back from trudging across campus to retrieve a scanner. No fun walking into that wind.
Last night I took over the living room and put my sweet new machine together. It’s a tight fit for the motherboard, but that’s the only complaint I have about the case. Everything went in pretty smoothly and everything came up when I booted it for the first time. I actually thought nothing was working just because of how quiet it is. I had the side panel off and I couldn’t even hear the fan rev up. I was shocked.
Haven’t installed on OS yet. Still just playing around with it. The BIOS is amazing. Lots of settings and features. One weird thing with the motherboard is I can’t really install one of the add-in cards because there’s too much on it for it to properly fit in the slot in the back of the case. Hard to explain, but it basically wont’ fit. Luckily, I don’t really need it, so I’m ok there.
The video card is a lot bigger than I imagined, but it looks awesome. It pretty much covers up PCI slots and some of the onboard audio connectors, but that’s ok. If I end up buying another one to utilize the SLI, I don’t know if I’ll be able to put much else on that motherboard.
The heatpipes on the video card and the north-south bridge are making this super quiet. I’m really impressed. More news and pictures later.
So my box of computer parts mysteriously transported itself from Little Rock, Arkansas to my doorstep in just under 2hrs. I was impressed. So now I just have to find some time to “pimp my ride”, to use the parlance of our time.
In other news, I should be acquiring a new copy of Windows soon and I have the pleasure of listening to Muse’s new album in my sound proof office.
My case and RAM from outpost.com got here amazingly fast. My stuff from NewEgg has not. It’s scheduled to arrive today. Friday it was in Indianapolis. Friday night it was sent to Louisville and then from there it was sent to Little Rock, Arkansas. I’m doubting it will be at my door when I get home from work.
