Things are definitely coming along with the Lebowski podcast. Tonight Moser, Sevier, Gunner, Andy and myself watched the movie together and then recorded about an hour worth of stuff. Hopefully we sound at least a tiny bit worth listening to. I’m waiting until tomorrow to give them a listen.

Looks like Netflix is trying to up the bar a little. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this. I’ve been with Netflix for a while and am always frustrated as to how little the service as matched up to what they advertise. However, all the services are similar and I don’t want to be switching services every 3months. It’ll be interesting to see where they go with this.
While sitting in Robby’s living room tonight with Liz watching the Golden Globes, I realized something about Westerns. I’m a huge fan a Clint Eastwood, but not John Wayne. While talking about this it hit me….
John Wayne is to Westerns as Jackie Chan is to Martial Arts.
You may disagree with me here, but here’s my logic. When I watch a Western I like gunfights, I like accurate depictions and I sometimes like it when the bad man prevails. When I watch martial arts, I don’t only want to see people with skills, I want to see them bringing a world of pain as only Walter Sobchak can describe it. Chan and Wayne make these serious things funny. They put a glossed over fantasy on what I would like the reality to be. I’m not saying these two actors do their jobs poorly, I just don’t dig their styles.
I don’t know what I’m doing, but the strength is sure coming back. Today Liz spotted me for a set of 315 on decline. I only got 2 reps on my last set, but at least I was able to get 3 plates. Next week I’ll start doing sets of 15 and start working on my stamina.
Today I had a meeting of sorts with my co-conspirators of my new podcast idea. I think they’re as excited as I am now. We’re going to be getting together again in a few days for some more R&D on the project. We should be easily able to make our goal of episode 1 out before February.
This one isn’t out yet, but we recorded the other night. I was a little scared at first because we had a few guest speakers in to talk about the show Firefly and they were definitely uber-fans. It’ll be interesting what we have for a finished project after Steve is done editing it because many of their responses were a bit scatterbrained and hard to understand. I knew what they were talking about because I’ve seen the show and am a fan, however, if you weren’t immersed in their world, it was unintelligible super-fan-hype.
This is what I’m wanting to avoid with the Lebowski podcast I’m trying to get started. Right now I have web space, an email address and a cast. We just need to record.
I was in shock and awe this morning when I realized I couldn’t find a single Big Lebowski podcast on iTunes. I then went to my big brother, Google, and couldn’t find anything there either. Sure there are some references here and there, but not a single podcast dedicated to one of the best movies in the parlance of our times.
So what have I done? I’ve contacted a few friends that are in close proximity to me in the efforts to start one up. If I did this it would have to be planned out, nothing too crappy. Anyways, I guess we’ll see what happens.
I’ve still been thinking about this computer upgrade and have made a few more changes to my plan.
- I’ve decided to scrap the cheap processor and get a dual core Opteron. Single core just wouldn’t be worth it if I’m going to try and run Vista in the near future.
- I’ve also decided to scrap the SLI/Crossfire idea since I really wouldn’t be utilizing it. Even if I got one video card now and maybe got another one later, it wouldn’t be worth it.
- I’ll need to get a new power supply because new motherboards have 24-pin connectors and my current one is only a 20-pin connector (thanks Telman)
- I might buy a case from Telman
The main thing I need to figure out is how much money I want to spend. Once my budget is solidified, I’ll then be able to make decisions on how much to spend here and there. I’ve also decided to hold out until Vista is released. I might be able to get a free copy bundled with a motherboard or processor.

Christmas
Saturday, Liz, Robby, Matt and myself all sat down at our table to a game of Risk. I hadn’t played in a very long time. Last time would have been college or before. It was a lot of fun. We all made the mistake of trusting Robby and he beat us all in a Napoleonic/Hitler-esque move. It was impressive.
Maybe we can get a game day every other week or once a month. That would be a lot of fun.
After getting some advice and some spare moments spent poking around Newegg.com, my favorite place to buy parts, I have a better plan of what I would like to do.
Plan A: (boring plan)
Get a new video card and be done with it.
Plan B: (cool plan)
Seriously upgrade my PC and get Liz setup with something better from what’s left.
Motherboard:
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
For starters, I’m a huge ASUS fan. I’ve been using their motherboards for years. They’ve never let me down. One of the big reasons I like this on is that I’ll be able to re-use my RAM and still have plenty of slots and the capability to upgrade in the future.
This also has (2)PCI-x16 slots, (1)PCI-x4 slot and (1)PCI-x1 slot. Combine this with the SLI feature and you can do some sweet things with the video.
Another nice feature is support for IDE, SATA 1.5 and SATA 3.0 drives. The onboard audio has digital out and there’s plenty of USB 2.0 combined with Firewire.
Processor:
AMD Opteron 144 Venus 1000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model OSA144BNBOX - Retail
Kind of like ASUS, I’m a big AMD fan. I’ve been using them since my 286 days. This one isn’t blazing fast, but I don’t need blazing fast.
RAM:
Like I said before, I’ll be able to re-use my 1.5gb of DDR-400, however, if I want to utilize the dual-channel capabilities, I’ll need to get another 1gb stick so I have identical sticks.
Video:
With the SLI available on the motherboard, I’m thinking of picking up a couple PCI geforce cards. Not exactly sure what though. This isn’t something I need to spend much money on because I’m not a hardcore gamer. I could just go with one card.
Hard Drive(s):
Right now I have a WD 120gb running windows and another WD 200gb full of TV shows and whatnot. What I would like to do is spend about $100 on a couple WD SATA drives and put them in a RAID 1 configuration.
Summary:
I’m thinking Plan B would be much cooler than Plan A. If I did go ahead with this, the next question is a case. The one I have would work, but I wish I had something that pushed air better, had a side vent, and 120mm fans. I always hate looking for a new case because I can never find anything that’s exactly what I want. I also have a case in the closet, but that moves air even worse then the one I’m currently using. It is made out of sturdy steel though, so I could mod it out and cut some holes. However, I’ve never actually done that before and don’t have the necessary tools to do so. I think that’s about it for now. I’ll update as necessary.
