One part I always like about the holidays is being able to see friends. I’d say I’ve seen a good amount so far. I got home and saw Josh, Matt, Tyler and CJ last week along with the family. I also ran into people like Bendog and Jodi, Cheeks, Joezinga…oh, and we got to hang out with Matt and Liz too. It’s been good so far.
So what kind of things are you guys doing for New Years? I never end up doing too much exciting. I’m kinda hoping to watch some more Battlestar Galactica or some movies or whatever. We kinda invited some people over last minute. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
In an earlier post I had hypothesized that Liz might be a fembot…well know I’m wondering if she’s not a Cylon. Just last night she decided she didn’t want to finish her slice of beefy beef stick (also known as salami or summer sausage) and she tried to trick me, using X-Files skills, and make me eat it.
Well I hope all of you are doing well and have a good New Years. Watch out for drunk drivers and if I hear you were one of them I might have to punch you in the ear.
Christmas here, Christmas there, Christmas everywhere. Once again, the holidays have come and I’ve received more gifts than I know what to do with. I got to hang out with the siblings a bit, and as usual, gained about 10lbs eating copious amounts of food.
I did buy myself a couple old computer games and have been playing Civilization 3 a bit. I’m looking into getting a new video card too. The Matrox is great, but it has no 3D capabilities for newer games.
Lifting has also been treating me well. Liz and I went in today - first time since last week. Last week I was able to do 245 on decline and then on regular bench for sets of 8. Tonight I was doing sets of 5 and was able to do 295 on my last set for decline. Hopefully my numbers keep going up and I’ll get back to where I should be.
We started watching Battlestar Galactica. It’s a Sci-Fi show about these robots called Cylons that are taking over the human world. The humans created them, but they became self-aware and tried to exterminate their masters. A bit like the Terminator movies in that sense, only this show is so much better. Liz and I watched the mini-series last night and have started a second episode already. I think we’re hooked.
When playing around with some of the widgets/plugins, I noticed something quite interesting about the search bars. The included search bar searches all of my posts and the google search bar uses Google to search my blog. The Wordpress search works much better than Google because Google doesn’t have all of the archives indexed properly and doesn’t always find everything it should. Therefore, I would say scrap the Google search plugin if you want people to actually find things.
It turns out that Sylvester Stallone and I have something in common. We’re both getting back into shape. I’m not getting up at 5am, drinking raw eggs for breakfast or punching sides of beef. However, I have been getting my sorry self back into the weight room and instead of running up the steps to wherever that is, I’ve been getting on the stair-climber. Liz has been going with me too. Even though I’m weak and I just don’t have the stamina I used to, it’s always interesting that I have that base strength still there. Monday I was declining 245 on sets of 8 and last night I was able to do shrugs with 295. I’m getting there. The sad part is how much it’s wearing me out. If I can keep at it and keep my asthma at bay, maybe I’ll be back up to benching 300 by the end of the spring semester. That would be nice.
It’s at times like Christmas that we tend to think of our loved ones; those that are living, and those that are dead. Yesterday, I chose to remember Big Red. Big Red wasn’t exactly a member of my family. He was more a friend of a friend. That friend would be Shorb, and I’m sure he’s finding it hard to deal with the loss as well. I’m sure many of you don’t know, but I actually starred in a documentary about big Red back in 2004 and had a supporting actor role. I even had my own deleted scene in the DVD “extras”. Last night I watched that movie and remembered fondly all those loops around the loop. And those lovely, smothered hash browns I enjoyed at Waffle and Steak. We’ll always remember you Big Red.
I downloaded the latest and greatest that Microsoft has to offer for our Media entertainment. I’m sure it’s cooler and better, but after less than 1 day of use, I with I had version 10.
Cons
My main complaint is how I view my music library and choose songs to play. I liked being able to drag and drop songs to the “Now Playing” list. I also liked being able to look at my library by artist with expandable menus. They’ve axed that feature so you just get this huge list that takes forever to scroll through.
Pros
I do have to say it looks prettier and everything is “smoother” with that shiny/shaded/metallic look to it. Other than that, I don’t have much else to say about it. I’ll have to explore some more features.
They’ve also integrated a thing called Urge. As far as I know it seems to be a music store. I noticed in version 10 they tried to integrate Napster. I’m not really sure how I feel about this. I read a little diddy that said Urge has free stuff for me. I haven’t looked into it yet. During installation I also had the option to setup a different music service. I don’t know if that means you could setup eMusic or an iTunes store or something similar. I guess that’s something else to poke around and explore with.
Last night Liz and I got to hang out with the one and only Crack Timmy and Jennifer Hess. We got to talk about all kinds of crazy things, made plenty of movie references, ate some Hoe’s and even introduced them to Arrested Development. It was a wonderful night.
Crack - I’m expecting a full report on your thoughts about Arrested Development Season 1.
Yesterday we all went to see Over the Rhine’s Christmas show in Cincinnati. Liz and I rode with Karen, Rajeev and Arya. This time the car didn’t break down on the way which was a definite bonus. We then met up with Soulman and January at a local Indian restaurant and got some spicy food beforehand. Afterwards we found Phil and went to the show. I don’t know if it was where we were sitting, but I thought the sound was poor compared to a couple weeks ago when Liz and I saw them in Bloomington. Karin’s mic was way too hot and you could barely hear Linford. None of the instruments seemed to be mixed well, and the sound was almost overpoweringly loud. It reminded me of some of the things I had to deal with when running sound back in the day.
It was a fun time though. In the theater my chair was kinda broken. I think it wasn’t bolted to the floor cause I constantly felt like I was balancing on one leg of a chair. I hope I wasn’t whacking the guy’s legs behind me. In the parking garage Liz and I had a sword-fight and before we left, we witnessed somebody drive over a barrier thing and then not know how to get over it. I went over and lent a hand. Luckily they were in a Blazer and not a Metro.
On the way back Rajeev and I were in the front and got to talk about all sorts of manly things like work and computer-related topics. We even introduced him to Hardees on the way back and he’s a fan. I ordered a #4 - 1/3lb Thickburger with bacon. What I received was a 2/3 lb Thickburger with bacon. That’s not even on the menu folks. You can get a 2/3lb Thickburger, but it doesn’t come with bacon. You can also order a Monster Thickburger, but that doesn’t come with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. I’m not sure what happened, but I was delighted in my free meat upgrade. JRod would have been proud.
Well, now it’s back to the grind. I think Liz and I are going to try and get some things cleaned up around here and also go say hi to Lana at some point.
My lame self got sick…again. This time it’s good ol strep throat. I haven’t had this for years. All I can say is that your throat hurts a lot and you can hardly swallow and you feel like crap.
In other news, I tried out that Top Hat Cheddar I got. It’s also known as a “mellow cheddar”. It definitely has a mellow taste, but it’s a bit weird too. Not something I could eat alone. On a cracker though, it tastes great. Might even be good cooked in something.
For now though, I’m making a grilled cheese with my McAdams. It should be delicious.
I finally have every post categorized. I’m not sure exactly how well each one is done. When you start with no categories and end up with a bunch after 600 posts, I’m sure some at the beginning missed out. There’s probably some that also have categories they shouldn’t really have.
I also finally found the line of code to make the categories show up hierarchically. Turns out I was looking in the wrong place. Pretty easy fix once I finally looked in the right place.
Still trying to get the permalink situation fixed as well. When I change the structure nothing shows up. I think there’s either a problem with my .htaccess files or something setting-wise on the server end. However, I don’t have much experience with this so I could be way off. I spent about a day on wordpress.com looking around. This page seems to have a lot of answers, but I’m still not getting things to work the way I want. If you’re really smart at this stuff and would like to try and help me out, I would really appreciate it.
