Phantom Cell Phone Rings

I’ve talked to friends before that sometimes have “phantom cell phone ringing”. I hate most ring tones and keep my phone on vibrate all the time. I also keep my phone in my pocket instead of one of those holster things on my belt - I think they look stupid. Sometimes I feel like my phone is “ringing” but when I pull it out of my pocket, there’s nothing happening.

I think I finally figured out what’s happening. I have an LG 1400 and any time it’s searching for a signal and I’m close to a speaker you start hearing the clicking/buzzing noise coming out of the speaker. It’s kinda weird. Sometimes it’ll do that right before it receives a call too. Well, right now I’m in the basement of a building that gets absolutely no cell coverage. Too much cement and steel surrounding me. I also just realized that my phone was continuously giving me that phantom vibrate feel. That’s when I realized it wasn’t “ringing”, it was just searching for a signal.

The vibrations aren’t a normal ring, they’re very faint. However, I usually wear baggy pants and shorts with big pockets. My phone is never really touching my leg so all I ever really feel is partial “rings” the way it is.

Has anybody else experienced this same thing?

Mine’s not exactly the same experience, but I almost always hear my phone ringing when it’s not. Even when I was gone this summer and didn’t have my phone on for a month, I often thought I was hearing it ring. I never reached for it, though, but I almost did several times.

As long as we’re getting a bit tangential, I have a story. I realized about 2/3 of the way through the latest season of “lost” that the alarm that the computer makes in the hatch every 108 minutes would make a nice ringtone. It gets your attention, but it’s not at all annoying.

However, the down side is that I can no longer go into a grocery story without getting a false alarm…. the scanners that are used in the checkout line are almost the exact same sound.

ha, that’s hilarious. I was just catching up on your blog and I read this and totally relate. i have moments frequently where I swear my phone is viberating and i pull it out and…nothing. i haven’t been able to determine any correlating factors (such as your theory about the phone searching for coverage). But now I’m on to it thanks to you. I will get to the bottom of this.
