Last night officially kicked off Movie Nights 2006. I’ve been doing this for a while now. Seems kinda weird to think of it in those kinds of terms, but it’s true. We watched The Life of David Gale. This is one I hadn’t seen before, but had always heard it was pretty good. There’s some great acting from Kevin Spacey, Laura Linney and Kate Winslet. I’ll probably be putting something up on the Movie Blog soon about it. Things have been pretty informal in the past. This year I’ve started sending out more official-looking emails and I think I’m going to be following these up with a post-email containing a link to the Movie Blog to encourage discussion amongst the viewers. If you’d be interested in coming and aren’t on my mailing list, let me know and I’ll add you.
Things seem to be busier than ever this summer and I’m not completely sure why. I seem to always be short on sleep with never a lack of something I could be doing. Liz is gone for about a month. She’s hitting up the Tour de France again. Maybe I’ll have some more time to get some things done and maybe not. I guess time will tell on that one.
As you may have read before, I’m a lover of Subway. I’m not too hip on Jared, Subway’s wannabe pop idol, but I do love their sandwiches. In fact, I just love sandwiches in general. When I was in highschool I went through a whole loaf of bread in a day sometimes. Anyways, when I go to Subway I like like to load my sandwiches up. They ask what I want on there and I say, “everything”. They then start to ask follow-up questions like, “spinach?” or “do you want peppers?” or “olives?” I thought everything meant everything. Did Webster change his mind? If so, I didn’t hear about it. Other quotes I always hear are
“Wow, that’s a big sandwich” - Today I said, “Yeah, that makes it taste better.”
“Are you sure you can eat all that?” - “Yeah, I think so.”
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to fit _____ on here” - What I always want to say is, “Well maybe if you didn’t pile 4 handfuls of lettuce on there we wouldn’t be having this problem.”
“My you’re a big eater” - No comment
“So do you eat half of this and save the rest for later?” - “Actually, I eat the whole thing.”
This past weekend I took a trip home cause my mom was getting remarried. I was able to get Friday off and I was also able to get left a little early on Thursday because I got some extra hours in on Monday. The ride out went pretty well and we were able to stop at Culver’s and get some of their delicious wares.
Friday I was able to go shooting and taught Liz the basics of firing a rifle. I’m proud to say that she can hit a box at 20 yards with no problem now. I was also able to try out my new Taurus auto and put 300-400 rounds through it. It only jammed up a couple times which isn’t too bad. It shot pretty nicely, but I think I still like my Winchester bolt action better. It’s lighter and I can also get more than 10 shells through it in the time it takes me to load and fire 10 in the Taurus. It is nice to be able to pop off 10 at once, but if I was in a pinch I’d much rather have the single shot. The reload time just takes too long.
The wedding went really well. It was at their new house and there were only 16 or so of us there. It was nice and small. It was a good time. It was also great to be able to see people. My grandparents were there of course, along with Becky and Andy. I was also able to hang out with Josh, Tyler, Matt and CJ on Friday for a bit.
On the way back we got left a little later than we had planned for, but that wasn’t a big deal. I had a major craving for a Hardees Thick Burger, but apparently once you get a little into IL, there isn’t a single Hardees on 74 until you hit Indy. Let’s just say that by the time we got to Indy we were out of luck. I eventually stopped later and got a sack of 10 with cheese at White Castle. Soon after getting back on the interstate, I came upon a deer that a guy in a truck had just hit. I swerved and missed the body, but ran over a piece of bone that got caught in my tire and shredded it up. Luckily Liz has AAA so we called them and I didn’t have to change it myself in the dark at 2:30am. I was also lucky enough to get a used tire for $10 this morning and so my car is back to normal already.
I also picked up a machete last night at Wal-Mart for $6. That’s right. Only six George Washingtons. How much cheaper can a kid get a weapon of mass destruction these days? I’m planning on using it to hack a path next time I go exploring. It should be fun.
So a couple weeks ago Liz and I were playing Stratego when she decided to attack me with a sergeant. Our conversation went something like this.
Liz: What do you got?
Me: What do you got?
Liz: 7
Me: I’m sorry to inform you, that your sergeant has been COLONELED!
I sometimes feel like so many people haven’t seen so many great movies. However, on the way back Monday Jeremy and I ran into some crazy hail and I said, “Have you seen that movie Magnolia?” And Jeremy said, “Oh yeah, when it starts raining frogs?”
That’s when I knew that there is hope. People actually do watch movies.
Last year in July I went to a DyKnow user group meeting by myself. When I got back my boss and I had a conversation
Boss: So do you have your receipts for me?
Me: Receipts? For what?
Boss: Food.
Me:
Boss: You did stop to get something to eat on the company dime, right?
Me: Uh……..no?
Boss: AMATEUR! Maybe you’ll learn next time.
Well, Monday was “next time” and I’d like to say I learned from my mistake. Jeremy went with me this time and we stopped at Denny’s on the way back. Turned my receipt in this morning and have already been reimbursed from petty cash. Lesson learned folks.
Today, right before it got dark, Liz and I drove to a grove of trees across from a church and cemetery on the Eaton Wheeling Pike right before it hits 3. There’s a house inside there that’s fallen down. It was pretty overgrown, but we found lots of bottles, broken glass, parts of dishes, some labels and other interesting things. If we had planned better, we would have gotten there when there was more light. It was pretty hard to see in there anyways because of the dense tree cover. It was pretty cool though. We need to go back again sometime.
That was the latest diagnosis last time I was having serious pain problems in my shoulders. I really think doctors don’t know what my problem is. It’s been called so many things. Funny thing is I’ve been given arthritis medication and that seems to help. Almost every time the weather changes there is the possibility of my hands, shoulders, wrists and/or knees hurting. Right now my right knee has been hurting bad all week. So I took some of my old-man medicine and it definitely works. Makes everything kinda numb and it doesn’t hurt but it still does. Oh yeah, it also kinda makes me a little loopy and not with it. I don’t really like that part though.
One of my very good family friends is here this week for a conference. Suella used to watch me a lot as a kid back in Phoenix and was sort of my other mom back in the day. Turns out her librarian conference is at IWU so we got to hang out. Suella and I met Liz at Johnny Carino’s last night for some food and great conversation. It was a good night.
Ever get really confused on what day it is? I’ve felt like it was Monday all day today. Mostly because I went into work for 5hrs today. It’s weird how something like that can totally throw your week off.
