The other day Liz was asking me what I thought of some “classic” actors. Everyone she named off I loved. Here’s some classic actors I think you should check out if you haven’t seen any/many of their movies. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but these guys are all worth your time.

So I’ve been sick for a while. First I was having more of the standard asthma problems. Not really sure what the exact cause was this time. I’ve been seeming to have a lot of problems this year so far. After being gone for 3 days last week, I came back to work on Friday and picked up the whatever bug everybody has. Saturday I woke up sounding like Darth Vader and it just got worse from there. Luckily I was able to get into the doctor on Monday morning and get some drugs. Since then I’ve just been trying to breathe.
As always in January, the Soulman, the Schnaps and the Chalupa get together for a round of fun. We usually meet up in Funlumbus, but right now Schnaps is house watching for his sister and brother-in-law so we’re hanging out here. We’ve had a couple really good meals at some awesome local restaurants, we got to meet Dave, we toured the greenhouses, performed copious amounts of doughnuts in Soulman’s car on several loading docks, watched Wedding Crashers 2x, watched some Seinfeld, ate at IHOP, have made many movie references, told lots of stories and have had as many laughs as the legal limit allows and then some. I’d say it’s been a good weekend so far.
It’s pretty cool seeing my last post get a little discussion going. I didn’t say everything I wanted to say because I was hoping some other people would…and they did. I’m always interested in hearing what other people have to say about stuff. So please feel free to still put your two-cents in if you feel the need.
I didn’t actually watch the Golden Globes this year; I was too busy watching Chumscrubber. I have, however, read a lot about it on the web and have heard various things from other sources. I’m a bit saddened and disappointed to hear lots of talk about the “Gay Globes” and “No Christian Hoorays for Hollywood“. I don’t agree with the way people are treating these films.
I consider myself a christian. Sometimes I’m proud of that and other times not. Those “not” times are usually a direct result of seeing the negative effects my fellow “christians” have had on others. Because of this, I sometimes try not to advertise some of my beliefs. I’d rather just come off as a ‘normal’ person instead of being judged right from the start for others’ actions.
So what’s wrong with a movie that contains some homo-sexual content? Are we afraid our kids might see this? That could be a valid concern, however, most movies containing this content are rated R. So if little kids are seeing them that means an adult took them or they somehow snuck in. Let’s just assume kids won’t see them because parents are responsible.
Are we mad about these films because they are an abomination? Last I checked the “Seven Deadly Sins” are pride, avarice/greed, envy, wrath/anger, lust, gluttony and slothfulness. I don’t see homosexuality in that list. Now I won’t say that the Bible promotes this, but it’s not one of the ‘big ones’ that people like to always point out.
Do people think that these movies are just going to be crap? That could be a possible opinion. What I think is a good movie and what anybody else think is a good movie aren’t always going to agree. For example, I enjoy dramas. For some reason dramas tend to be one of the least attended movie genres. Maybe this is because they’re ’slow and boring’ or maybe this is because some ‘gay’ movies are dramas. Brokeback Mountain is considered a drama, and a romance. Transamerica is considered a drama, adventure and comedy. Capote is a drama and a biography. So you might say the common thread is drama. So do all dramas suck? I’d have to disagree with that one personally. Maybe you don’t agree with the people that give out the awards. Maybe new types of awards need to be created. Maybe you’re just a philistine and need to acquire better taste.
Another possibility could be people are afraid of these movies. I’ll admit I used to be a bit homophobic in my younger days. I think that was a product of culture and tradition. Do I have a problem with these people today? Not really. I like to think I’ve really grown up in that area of my life in the past seven years or so. These are people just like everybody else. Why are some so opposed? If they’re reason is that these people are doing something wrong does this mean the opposed are perfect and do no wrong themselves? I’d be careful claiming that reason.
Ok, so lets see what we got here for reasons:
If you ask me, I’m not seeing any really good reasons here. Oh wait, here’s one. People are just mean, cruel, unprofessional and immature sometimes. Could that possibly be a reason? Please comment if you have any thoughts/opinions/ideas on this one.

So I saw the movie, The Constant Gardener way back when it cam out in theaters. At the time I thought it was ok. Nothing too cool or awesome, just ok. People seem to bring the movie up to me every once in a while, but in the past week or so it has been mentioned to me at least 9 times and all of the mentioners just loved it. I, on the other hand, have been liking it less and less every time I think about it. Last night the words, “I hate that movie” came out of my mouth. I don’t think I planned on saying that. It just happened. Then 10 minutes after saying that I get an email from Frenchy.
So I just called Andy up to tell him about The Ringer and Murderball and he tells me about his most recent accident. He has an 8″ gash in the back of his leg that starts at the top of his calf, runs up behind his knee and into his thigh. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to tell you he got this from a pogo stick. Apparently one of his friends has a super-duper pogo stick that sends you 5′ into the air. It has surgical bands on the inside and places where you can adjust the tension. He said all he remembers is getting on and then all of a sudden he was on his back with blood streaming all over his leg. He says the back of his leg tore a chunk of steel right off the foot pedals. That’s impressive. All I could compare it to was when I was swinging a stick around in our backyard then woke up on the ground. I had knocked myself out for 15min because I swung into a cotton clothesline. Andy was sitting on top of me and said, “Dude, that was awesome. Do it again!”
Sometimes I go to church with Liz on Saturday nights. Tonight Matt talked about the differences between the spiritual and secular parts of our lives. The truth is there shouldn’t be a separation. It was a good reminder. As evidenced in my earlier rant about fixing a computer - sometimes I could really use an attitude adjustment. The thing is, I’m all smiles and cheery when I’m doing it, I just complain/have a bad attitude later when I’m at home or talking to friends. It’s true that I sometimes over-commit myself to things, but that’s my fault. If I’m going to do something it’s needs to be done the right way. That includes what I’m actually doing and my attitude towards it.
On a second note, I saw The Ringer and Memoirs of a Geisha this weekend. Both good movies. The Ringer was absolutely hilarious.
