Marathons

Just got done with my first marathon of the summer. This time it was just me and Michael. We watched House of Flying Daggers, Wicker Park and Ray. Three top notch movies coming from three different time periods, genres, styles, etc. Quite a wide range on the selection. I’m really glad Michael suggested Wicker Park because when I first saw the preview for it I almost immediately wrote it off as not looking good. I probably would have never seen it had it not been for his suggestion.

Well, today is Memorial Day. This is the day we’re supposed to honor our armed forces. Funny thing is that it’s hard to find somebody actually doing that. You have people cooking out, people shopping for great deals on furniture and electronics, picnics down by lakes, ponds and in parks all over. Does anybody really remember what this day is all about? I’ve been reading a book called Brave Men Gentle Heroes. It’s about fathers and sons who fought in World War II and Vietnam. It’s basically first hand accounts and recollections about things that happened, people who made a difference, stories from the battlefield, treatment upon leaving or coming home, etc. It’s a pretty powerful book. I’ve always had a great respect for our armed forces and those that serve our country. I guess I’d have to say this book is just another good reminder. It also draws a lot of parallels between the two wars and talks about some of the things that went wrong and why the American public reacted the way they did. It’s definitely a good read. Liz recommended it to me and I’ll recommend it to everyone else. So if you remember, please think at least a little bit about what today stands for and next time you see a parade show a little respect when the color guard goes by. You never know who might be in the crowd that’ll smack you upside the head for not taking your hat off.

Becky

So I’m talking with my sister tonight and here’s a bit of what was said:

B: …and I really want to travel abroad for a while….
Me: abroad? where?
B: well i really want to go to france.
Me: france? you should go to spain and learn some spanish
B: but i don’t know any spanish and since i already know some french i should go to spain
Me: so when are you planning on doing this?
B: probably my junior year in january
Me: so are you keeping up on your french?
B: not really
Me: well you should what are you going to do if you want to order a cheese pizza?
B: well that’s easy cause i know how to say, “i want”
Me: ok so how do you say cheese pizza?
B: well, “i want” is blah blah and i think pizza is just pizza and cheese is blah
Me: ok, so how do you say i want a cheese pizza?
B: weird french words
Me: ok, so what do you do if they ask you where you live?
B: that’s easy they’l say……..and i’ll say ……….
Me: and what if they need your phone number?
B: i know my numbers…those are easy.
Me: so what are you gonna do if they tell you a joke?
B: what?
Me: what are you gonna do if they tell you a joke?
B: why would they do that?
Me: well if it’s so easy then maybe you’ll speak the french so well they think you’re a frenchy and tell you a joke.
B: what’s a frenchy?
Me: french person
B: well then I won’t understand them
Me: well what if they expect a response and you don’t respond and they get offended and don’t give you your cheese pizza?
B: that’s not gonna happen
Me: you don’t know that - so what’re you going to do?
B: well i guess i won’t eat any cheese pizza
Me: that’s not the attitude to have. you’re hungry here. that was the whole point in the first place. you’re hungry and need some cheese pizza. i think you need to keep studying french in college so you can avoid this whole situation and get that pizza
B: you’re ridiculous
Me: whatever. at least i can order pizza

……. several minutes later …………..
B: well i’m gonna go. have a good night
Me: i don’t know if i can
B: why not?
Me: well, i’m just kinda worried about you and your pizza

Update

Haven’t been on here in a bit. I apologize to all 5 of my readers. Let’s see….last weekend was graduation. I sat outside minus sunscreen and hat and am extremely sunburned. My mom said I got sun poisoning on my head. Let’s just say it’s not pretty. I was however able to see Mike and Sky, Isaiah, Deron, Liz, Lana, Lloyd, Skinny and Fat Mitch, Crack Timmy, Beebz, Norm, JRod, Toll, Crickit, Bendog, Epple, UPS, Ben, Mitch, and a bunch of other people whose names I’m forgetting cause it’s been a few days.

We’re doing mini-grants this week at work. My two people are kinda doing their own thing so I haven’t had too much to do. Next week I’m teaching the first PP class. I think the next one is end of June or so. I’ve been trying to juggle my schedule to fit in all these weddings and such. I need to get a calendar and just start writing everything down so I can better visualize it.

As far as anything intellectual, I’d have to say I’ve been thinking about how much I gossip without realizing it. There’s definitely times when I’m with certain people and we most definitely talk about other people. I really don’t know where to draw the line between just talking about friends and gossiping about them. I know there’s definitely times when it can go too far, but maybe that’s just something I need to work on. I don’t really see myself as a gossiper, maybe I just need to be less critical of others.

Movie night is starting up next week. If you wanna come and you haven’t been emailed by me let me know and I’ll get ya details.

PJ’s

Well, last night we had the last official PJ’s run. We had 21 people there which is most definitely our record. It started out as just 3 or 4 of us and then it sorta turned into 21. We had a great time though. Played some good music. Ate some good pizza. Feasted on Timmy Bread. Good times had by all.

Now I have to start thinking about the movie marathons that’ll be happening this summer. So I’m open to ideas. Tomorrow is graduation and I’ve decided to stay, then I gotta head out for Iowa. I won’t make it in time for the piƱatas at Andy’s grad party, but I’m sure there’ll be plenty of left over food.

Steak night

Well, tonight was the ever famous steak night. We had a waiter named Matt who tried really hard. Too hard in fact. He tried to be cool, tried to be one of us. Only he didn’t exactly fit in. He tried to make fun of me and bully me into buying a larger steak. I told him I didn’t want a larger steak. After repeating my statement a couple times he tried to back down and I just looked at him. So then he tried to make fun of crickit and I just kept looking at him. We told his manager we were only going to tip Abby - the new waitress who was learning from Matt. Bleu asked Abby, “so what’s the deal with Matt” and she got all bashful and didn’t know what to say. At least they kept the bread and drinks coming this time. All in all it was full of laughs and good stories. Oh, I also saw Sarah and Landon and Mrs. Boltz. That was cool that they came over and said hi to me.

I was talking to Sr. Sanjaime today for a few minutes and he mentioned that they could really use some computer help and to keep him in mind if I’d ever like to come to Spain. How cool is that? Let me answer for you - pretty freaking awesome. I don’t know if anything will ever come of it, but it was something really cool to hear.

Tomorrow night is PJ’s. I have some quarters. Elaine is going to buy me timmy bread. We will listen to Meatloaf and Tom Petty and Pour some sugar on me. I got one word for TLOFT - cockadoooooodledoo.

Eh

Today was kind of a blah sorta day. I got to work early cause I was gonna go see Unleashed but that didn’t happen. Had some annoying things happen at work, then lunch time came….and glorious burritos. Things were on the up and up and I had all afternoon to create the presentation materials for the demo of some software/equipment I’m doing tomorrow for some profs. I had everything done….then silly DyKnow did it’s trick on me again and I accidentally lost all my work. That was it, I had had it. So I left. Played a game on my computer for an hour or so, lifted, came home, did dishes, made up more burritos and then headed back in to work to re-do what I had already done. Took me a couple hours, but I also took in some more of my CD’s and ripped them to my hd at work. I find I listen to more music at work than at home these days. Besides getting constantly interrupted while trying to work this afternoon I also had to drive a girl over to the health center cause she cut herself kinda deep on the mat cutter. People wonder why they don’t cut correctly. It’s cause people misuse it and try to force things when they don’t want to be forced. That’s when things get bent and hands slip and people get gouged by razor blades. An idea was proposed to buy a new one, hide it so general people don’t use it and then leave the old one out for general use. That sounds like a great idea, but I’d give it 3 weeks or less before the “nice” one will get left out and lots of people will use it or somebody will be snooping around where they shouldn’t, find it, and use it while the people supposedly policing this aren’t doing their job.

Finals Week

It’s finals week already here. It’s amazing how fast time goes by here. Another school year out of the way. Pretty soon everybody’ll leave and it will be all nice and quiet again. I really like the summers here for that reason - I also like when there’s people around too. Got a batch of beans made up today and refried them so they’re all ready for burritos. Hopefully those should turn out pretty well. It’s cool to see people graduating and getting on with their lives, but it makes me a little sad at the same time too. Next year is pretty much gonna be my last batch of friends to be around here. I still know people but it’s not like I hang out with them much. Well, enough of the negativity - probably gonna see Unleashed tomorrow. Hopefully that’s a rockin good time.

Wrong number magnet

Recently it seems like I’ve been getting tons of calls - landline and otherwise. They’re always looking for somebody like Roger, Autumn, Bill, Sarah, etc. When’s somebody gonna call and actually ask for me? Is that too much to ask? Had a nice hour long chat with one of the coaches today. Turns out he’s pseudo familiar with my old stompin grounds. We talked a bit about good pizza places - you know, the important things.

Got a nice nap in right after work. Those are always the best. I was woken up by some horrendous hail though. Something was getting half killed outside and I’m not sure exactly what. I’m hoping it was just the dumpster getting hit that made all that noise - although I’m not really what that was though. I’m just hoping my car isn’t completely full of dents now.

Liz was supposed to get her braces off this morning. I remember when I got mine off. I couldn’t stop feeling my teeth. They were so smooth. It was a really weird sensation.

More busy-ness

Got an email this morning that Timdog is engaged. Didn’t see that one coming, but I’m immensely happy for him. I’m really hoping I can make it out to the wedding. Things just seem to be getting busier and going faster as the semester comes to an end. It’s hard to believe it’ll be summer again. How do old people handle it? Time just goes faster and faster.

I finished watched Firefly tonight. It’s a great show and I highly recommend it for anybody who is a fan of westerns and sci-fi. A big thanks goes out to Ed the maintenance man for suggesting it to me.

I was checking out The Voiz (linked on the right) tonight and Aaron has put up 3 short vids about being hispanic which sorta hit home for me. Can’t say I really know many people like me. When I run into them, whether it be in person or just reading about it, I feel like we have something in common. It’s hard to explain. It’s like when my family moved to Iowa and my whole class, including the teacher, made fun of me for not being aware of St. Patty’s Day or caring about it back in 2nd grade. I was soon known as the kid that punched you if you tried to pinch him for not wearing green. The funny thing is I sorta sub-consciously don’t wear green on that day.

I need to get some burritos made for Deron at least. I need to do some dishes and buy food. I also need to pay some bills before I forget they’re due next week. Maybe I’ll get to stuff tomorrow.

Back home again

Another weekend, another trip. This time it was to Columbus. I got to see Jon Stewart do standup stuff. It was pretty freaking hilarious. A lot like watching the Daily Show minus the desk and with a bit more freedom of what he could say. Thanks Liz.

Also stayed there for the weekend and hung out with Phil and Ed. Got to meet their roommates. If I remember right they are Greg, Alan, Jake and Trent. Also got in on a party at Eric’s house where we got lots of tasty meat and there was this crazy little kid that tried to act like Gollum. He also tried to make fun of everybody and didn’t always make sense. He started to say something about me and I started talking to him in spanish and that kinda shut him up. I was amused. At one point he was jumping onto the back of a guy and trying to bite him. I’m glad he didn’t do that to me. I probably wouldn’t have just ran around screaming for help.

Crickit’s back and staying at my place for a while. It’s fun having people around. Now I just need to clean the place and go buy some food.
