Sunny

It was awesome outside today. So awesome that I decided to leave work at 2:00. I was tired of doing nothing but update computers by myself in a room with no windows and absolutely nobody to talk to. So what did I do? I went to Blockbuster and rented A Day Without A Mexican, Pancho Villa and Motorcycle Diaries. The lady at Blockbuster totally mispronounced Pancho’s name and I really felt like correcting her but just kept my mouth shut. I guess I really am becoming like my grandpa. You should see him when he goes to this gas station chain called Pronto and they mispronounce the name of their business when he goes in to pay for it. So I got home and watched A Day Without A Mexican then watched Pancho Villa. Then Toll came over and we watched Motorcycle Diaries. I’d call that a good night.

Mentiroso

Well, knew it would happen sooner or later. Looking at my site stats today and I’m getting tons of hits from here. Apparently some turd goblin is calling himself “Chalupa” and dragging my good name through the mud. I oughta sic Original Paxil on him. One solid hit with the chicken should teach him a lesson he’d never forget. Well I replied on there saying I’m not this other wanker. Of course people probably won’t believe me and stuff - who knows. So if you feel like it, please tell this vato evil-imposter-wannabe-chalupa what a wanker he his and to take his 12yr old thoughts and shove em.

Shorb - I didn’t make all of it up….I’ll leave it at that. I used to do that kind of thing way more often…only I used to rarely ever tell anybody about it. It’s usually funnier if nobody knows, but I guess then I’m the only one laughing.

Work wasn’t too bad today. Spent all of it working on updates. Started to drive me a little nutty. All by myself, no music or anything. It wasn’t much fun. Bad news is I didn’t quite get half through all of em so I most definitely will need to work on them all day tomorrow too. I guess I could move some of them elsewhere to plug them into more ports, but then I have to move them all and that’s just a pain.

I got my Carlos Montoya 2-disc set in the mail today along with a ‘various artists’ flamenco CD. I’m looking forward to giving them a listen. It should be some good stuff.

Long Lines

If you’re ever wondering what not to do on a Saturday afternoon at high noon during prom season….don’t try to get fitted for a tux for your friend’s wedding and expect to get out of there before 1. That’s right, it pretty much took me an hour to get like 5 measurements taken. Craziness I tell you…craziness. Luckily Michael and I made it to the theater in barely enough time to catch The Aviator. It was a pretty decent movie. I definitely enjoyed it.

Afterwards we went to Olive Garden to grab a snack. It was amazing - we just walked in and were seated. That’s never happened to me before at that restaurant. We had this really cool waiter named Sam. It was a bit hard to understand him some of the time. Michael asked if he was speaking spanish. I’m not really sure if he was or not. Maybe I was understanding his spanish or something - who knows. There were a lot of mexican looking people working there. They even congregated periodically behind our table to whipser and gossip to each other. We got our breadsticks and salad and started in on it right away. Before we knew it, Sam comes over with another bowl of salad, dumps the rest of the first bowl on our plates and informs us, “you’re not working hard enough on salad. Eat up!”. Then he rushed off to give more awesome service to his other tables. This guy rocked and we tried to tip him appropriately.

I’ve been passively whittling a hole in my desk. I’ve been spinning my knife on its end while watching SG-1 episodes. I’m into season 5 now. Next week shouldn’t be too stressful as I’ll get to work on some projects by myself w/o interruptions.

In the spirit of Liz’s laundry days - I feel like making a confession. A few weeks back I was up in Shorb’s/Frenchy’s/Scott’s apartment and Scott kept complaining about water in his ear. I suggested he take some newspaper, roll it up in a cone and light it on fire. If you make the cone big enough and roll it right, the fire creates a pressure change and usually it takes care of the water-in-ear problem. Now with the little I knew about Scott, I was figuring if he did it, he would probably freak out and it would be hilarious. I really didn’t expect him to do it, but all of a sudden he was all gung-ho about doing it. He tried to do it, but didn’t roll the newspaper correctly so it didn’t burn right. I figured he was giving up so I went downstairs to my place to check on something in my apartment. I was gone about 10-15min and when I got back, he was still trying to do it. I was actually pretty surprised. Shorb was poised with a cup of water, ready to douse the cone if the fire got too close to Scott’s head. Well, the fire did get close and as Shorb tried to douse it, Scott knocked the cup out of his hand. Then the girly screaming ensued. Lesson to be learned: Chalupa can be sneaky and devious. Yeah, so sometimes I suggest people do things that I know will be freaking hilarious. Wouldn’t you do the same thing?

Norm

Good ol Norm always has hilarious things to say:

hi, you’ve reached bill donna and ben we’re not *beep* what’s wrong with this *beep* this worked in my office!

man, i’d love to meet up with him in a year if i can grow the stones to call him Bill to his face between now and then

heya Bill, remember me, the only kid that skipped your class more than josh winslow

Good Friday

Well, besides being that holiday coinciding with Easter, today was indeed a good day.

  • I got my dishes cleaned
  • Ate some more spicy enchildas
  • Finished season 3 of SG-1
  • Recieved a flamenco CD in the mail
  • Found $40 I had forgotten about
  • Talked to Perry and found out about this cool radio station
  • Looks like Michael and I will be hanging out some tomorrow

Well that’s definitely not an exhaustive list, but a good one at that. I wish next Friday would hurry up so I can go see Sin City. That movie definitely looks promising. I’ll also need to watch some “spanish” movie and write a paragraph or two about it. That shouldn’t be too hard. Speaking of which, I still haven’t seen A Day Without A Mexican. I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t count though - but I still need to see it sometime. Well it’s looking like it’ll be a nice quiet week with most of the population gone for spring break. Almost everybody’s out of my apartment building too. That’s also means lots of chillin for me with movie watching, snack eating and general laying around. It’s also kinda nice cause I get do a lot of maintenance stuff at work that is normally quite hard to do when classes are going on. Well, I guess it’s probably about time to start up season 4 of SG-1…

Whoa

So my brother and I were IM’ing each other today just talking about whatnot as usual. Turns out we had both been thinking it would be cool to get a tattoo of the same thing on our shoulders. Then we both kinda had another idea at the same time. It’s crazy. So we were thinking it’d be pretty sweet to get the Alba coat of arms put on our shoulder with ‘Alba’ written underneath. That could most definitely rock. It’s kinda weird how that sorta thing happens between us every once in a while. It’s like we’re made up of some of the same stuff or something. It’s sorta like when you say something and somebody else says the exact same thing at the exact same moment. It’s like you shared a moment or something. Probably not in the Chasing Amy sense, but sorta at the same time. My brother was also telling me he told my mom he wanted to get a tattoo and she said absolutely not and my brother basically proved her wrong on her point. Wish I could’ve been there. I know some people think tattoos are stupid or dangerous or whatever. I’ve always thought it’d be cool to get something, but you need to get something that you’ll be cool with in 40 years cause those kind of things stick with you. I think it’s also good to think about where you get it put cause that could have future ramifications as well. Like don’t get one on your head or face. Even though that could like wicked sweet when you’re age 16-25, it usually doesn’t look wicked sweet when you’re 40+ and working an office job unless you own the company. Some things you just have to do because it’s the way things are done. I’m all for dressing and looking the way you want, but you can’t show up to business meetings looking like you’re ready to go swimming or smelling like you’ve been doing yard work for the past 3 days in the middle of July. Those kind of things just don’t get you anywhere. So anyways, if you do know a little about me you probably know I’m sorta into this whole hispanic thing. If you don’t know why or wonder why cause I’m white it’s cause my mom’s side of the family is mexican with spanish origins. The story goes that the first Alba came to the ‘new world’ on Columbus’ 3rd voyage and my family’s been in Mexico for 500 years. Now even though I look white (and am), my grandpa and all his family definately look spanish. It’s that olive complection thing - really hard to explain but really easy to spot. Since I’m only a quarter, I’m more other stuff than hispanic, but my brother and I really identify with that part of our family cause there aren’t many on my dad’s side (including my dad) that have been nice to us, encouraged us, and made us feel proud to have that last name. It’s many long stories and quite complicated and definately not something to go into at the moment. So I guess in all the rambling I’m trying to say that my brother and I have a very very very large amount of respect for our grandpa. He’s a great man. He’s a wise man. He’s a very well respected man at his workplace, at his church, in his community and even within the state for the interpreting he does. He’s the kind of guy I know that I wish I could be just the tiniest bit like when I’m all old and grown up. So getting something tattoo’d on my arm symbolizing that probably wouldn’t mean much to my grandpa, but it would most definitely mean something to Andy and I.

Tonight Bendog showed up at my door rearing to go see a movie so we headed over to Robby’s and got entertained for a couple hours. That was my first time ever on 2nd Berg I think. Robby definately has a well decorated room with lots of sweet movie posters. Well, I should probably try to get some sleep. I’m actually not really tired at the moment. Spending the past couple days just laying around and resting makes you not so tired when you finally start feeling better. Now I need to just start breathing better….stupid asthma….

Boo + Yea = booyea

One use of the word ‘boo’ is to show distaste for something. One use for the word ‘yea’ is to show acceptance or pleasure of something, yet when you combine the two it makes something completely different. So here’s a list of things to which I say ‘boo’ and ‘yea’.

Boo

  • people coming into my work place sicker than dogs and getting me sick
  • going to the doctor and hearing the receptionist loudly talking with Maxine about her uncontrollable diarrhea and the sores on her butt - not on her buttocks but mainly on and around the “opening” (I may have said too much there)
  • George Lucas directing films
  • the tomato going bad in my fridge before I was able to slice it and add it to my grilled cheese today
  • the crazy weather

Yea

  • all the downloaded tv shows on my computer to keep me occupied when sick
  • PJ’s and their sweet jukebox
  • Big Red
  • enchiladas
  • my dvd burner
  • movie marathons

Now this is by no means an exhaustive list…just a few ideas if you know what I mean. Well I hope this is a sufficient enough post for Soulman. Today he informed me I must not like him anymore….maybe that had something to do with my lack of posting lately. Well read this and don’t weep Silent Bob cause this Jay has another post for you.

Iron Chef

Hopefully somebody out there knows what I’m talking about - cause that was an awesome show to watch with Butros and Uber. Today my group came over and we cooked food. I got home from church around 10:30 or so, picked some things up and then got to work on the potatoes for the enchiladas. After peeling, slicing and cutting about 2/3 of a 5lb bag I got a blister on my thumb. I hate it when that happens. It better go away. Cause if it doesn’t I’m gonna…..I’m gonna…..who am I kidding? I got nothing. I’ll just have to wait for it to disappear. Anyways, we definitely got a lot accomplished. Erika made gazpacho and Tim whipped up some tortilla española. Sarah was going to buy some churros but wasn’t able to find some so she got a recipe and she made some. It was a whirlwind of culinary skills in my humble abode today with minimal bloodshed. Erika somehow slashed her finger on the lid to some olive oil. It was deep too cause it was gushing for a while. I figured it was just a bleeder but it kept bleeding for a while. It’s always weird how those kinds of things happen.

Snagged a VCR from work for the weekend and watched the original Star Wars trilogy and Casino. Most of those were playing while I was doing my thing in the kitchen. It’s nice to have something going on in the background. Also, if I’ve seen the movie before, I can imagine what’s happening in my head since I kinda know anyways.

I have to say I’m a little excited to share the food with the class. I get annoyed sometimes with the crap “ethnic” food that people eat around here. I sometimes wonder why it gets dubbed “ethnic” in the first place. Seems to me like all food should be “ethnic” except for that of the Native Americans since they were sorta here first. Anyways, I think it should go well.

Another one of my graduated international friends is going to be around this week. Maybe I’ll get the chance to hang out with em. Oh yeah, Sin City is also going to be in theaters soon. Robert Rodriguez ditched the director’s guild to make this movie. He also happens to be the leader of a pretty sweet band I enjoy listening to as well. Let’s just say I have high hopes for this one.

Sleeping habits

I’ve been feeling like I’m a bit off…and rightly so. Friday after work I started watching TV then fell asleep. I then woke up around 4:30am. When noon hit, it felt like it should be supper time, not lunch time. It’s really weird. I’ve been watching some SG-1 lately and enjoying it immensely.

Tonight I had the privilege of seeing a flamenco guitarist perform. His name is Ronald Radford and he’s pretty good. He has a web site and a CD for $15. I was looking on amazon and it’s going for $20 there - plus you got shipping on top of that. He’s studied with some of the greats like Carlos Montoya and the program said he’s the only person to ever get the Fullbright Scholarship in flamenco. I was quite impressed with his musical skills. I suggest you check him out sometime if you’re into that sorta thing.

Tuesday my group’s presenting on food so we’ve decided to make some food to take into class. I decided to make up some enchiladas. I have some stuff left over from chalupa, but that’s not easy to take in and have samples for people. This’ll be much easier - plus, I figured it’s time to make some again.

Burn Fest

Well, I’m definitely making good use of my burner. I’ve also made some discs of Scrubs for Tara. I always love sharing things I love with other people. Right now I’m working on seasons 2 through 6 of SG-1. I’ve been having a good ol time watching some episodes from season 1 today. Two summers ago I think we watched seasons 1 through 7 with Rupp. Those were some good times.

For my class we’re making some food for Tuesday. It should be fun. We only have 2 presentations to give for the semester and this will be our second. It seems like we’re getting off easy cause our first presentation was a piece of cake too. Two of the people in my group have spent semesters in Spain and I can make mexican food so we’re pretty much set. Oh, and today the prof also announced that instead of coming to class next Thursday, we have to go watch a spanish movie and write up a paragraph or two about it. Hmmmm….I’m being told to watch a movie. What torture! ¡Qué horrible!

Well, only one more day til the weekend - and that’s what everybody’s working for anyways.
