King of the Mountain

Nice slow easy day at work today. Nothing too stressful or anything. Nice lunch - grilled cheese with american and bologna on italian bread. Ducked out of work a little early then called my grandma and got one of the most precious pieces of information known to this average sized, bald spanish-mexican…….THE INGREDIENTS TO HER ENCHILADAS. That’s right folks, I said it. There’s no real recipe cause there’s nothing written down. My grandma cooks like I do…well, I guess I should say I cook like her. You basically throw some stuff together then add some more if the taste isn’t right. Well, I now know what goes into the enchiladas, I just have to figure out how much of what. She didn’t even know how much of the stuff she puts in. I’m definitely going to have to give these on a try on Saturday. However, now I really need to tend to the potatoes cooking on my stove.

No more tamales

Well, finally got rid of those tamales. Not that they were bad or anything, but I was getting tired of eating them. Too much of a good thing……yeah I think you know the rest of that one. Things have been busy as usual. Hopefully they’ll slow down soon. Then I’ll get that infamous enchilada receta and make some and have some amigos/as over and chill.

Been slowly getting back into the lifting. Really wish they hadn’t shut down the weight room for a whole month. I’ve really noticed my arms have gotten smaller. For instance, I have some shirts where the sleeves used to be tight and now they hang loose. What’s up with that? I also am nowhere near as strong as I used to be earlier in the summer. That’s kinda sad. So hopefully I’ll be back doing normal stuff soon.

My boss ok’d me taking a class next semester which is cool. I’m going to take the spanish placement exam and get myself back into a spanish class. Was talking to one of the profs about it and I’m kinda excited. This should rock. Haven’t taken any spanish since I’ve been at Taylor, but now I can take it for free. Luckily I’ve pseudo kept up with it. Since I’ve been trying to re-learn some stuff I noticed the other day I was just thinking in spanish. Let me clarify by saying I was having spanish thoughts in my head, not english thoughts translated…..if that makes sense. It’s really cool when that happens. Hasn’t for a while. Well, it’s really past my bedtime and since I’m well on my way to being an old person and not staying up til 6am anymore I should probably do something so I’m awake at work tomorrow.

Calling all hot women

I’m on lunch, but had to post. Check out this site. http://www.datetosave.com/

Aftermath

Well, another great Oktoberfest. I believe this makes number 5. Started out actually going to the festival to make fun of people with mullets in Columbus, but now we just hang out at Soulman’s place.

Here’s some of the highlights:

  • Gavette singing and dancing
  • Cowgirl and her party next door
  • Throwing the frisbee on various garage roofs
  • New sound system on Mr. Sandwich
  • Lady cop asking us to be quiet
  • Halo
  • BHouse chatting online
  • Extremely cheap pastries from the panadería
  • Burritos from that burrito place
  • Pizza
  • More engraving mistakes from Bhouse’s brother
  • Schnaps and I weren’t the youngest ones there

Well, I could go on and on but some things are too hard to write and some things you probably don’t care to hear about. It’s always great to see the guys. It’s too bad Butros is in Japan and couldn’t make it. Schnaps was able to make it this year which was very nice. A big surprise was this was the first year since this started that Schnaps and I weren’t the youngest ones there. I don’t really know how many more ‘younger’ people we’ll get to this thing because nobody really knows most the people that show up from the floors. Next year will be back in Columbus….a ‘going back to the roots’ sort of movement if you will. Unfortunately none of us knows the whereabouts of Heather, but we have Cowgirl now and I’m sure Soulman will have new neighbors.

OKfest2k4

Well the week is over, no more training at nights, I get to head out at 10am and then there’s Chicago. Things are definitely looking on the up and up. As usual I’m the only one around at work though. This is starting to remind me of the summer. Sometimes I wonder if they just assume I’m going to be here. Like what would happen if I was sick or just decided to show up late? Oh well. No big deal I guess.

Last night I needed a new blade on my razor so I opened up the package I bought a while ago and they had these promotional tripple blade razors in there so I try one out. Many those are awesome. My head is now super smooth. I should buy some more of those if I get the chance.

Looks like the only thing I really need to do now is print off some directions, make sure I have toll money and not get too bored in the next hour and a half.

Last Batch

Well, made the third and last batch of tamales. 2lbs of strawberries go a long way. I got some string this time to tie them off in hopes they wouldn’t bubble out. Good thought, except I filled and/or wrapped them too tight so some of them kind split a little at the seams. They’ll still be fine though.

Had another night of ETC student training. Just one more night of it tomorrow and then I shouldn’t have to mess with that for the rest of the semester anymore. It’s not that it’s horrible, it’s just more time out of my day. The bright side is that I’m leaving really early on Friday cause I can only work 40hrs/week. This means I can get up to Chicago at a really decent time and hopefully not run into rush hour traffic.

SammyII is having initiation tonight. I was invited up, but don’t really think it’s my place to be involved with that kind of stuff anymore. I don’t live there anymore, most of the guys don’t know me, and I’m an employee - not just an alumni. Oh, the responsibilities of being old.

Tecnología para la gente que servimos

Tonight was the first of 3 nights of training this week. The student workers come in and we get to tell them how to do stuff. The official motto is Technology for the people we serve. Mel said it en español. I just love hearing spanish being spoken - it warms my heart or something. Maybe it has something to do with being hispanic and growing up hearing the language. Let’s just say I don’t get many chances to hear it in Upland, IN. I’m almost out of those tamales. I’ve been giving them to people. Got more strawberries though so I think I’m gonna make a few more after work tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll be perfect this time. Third time’s always a charm, right?

It has really cooled down tonight and I’m loving it. I’m just kinda sad I had the windows shut while I was at work tonight. Came home to a sauna and to that I say ufta. I should get another fan so I can have one at the screen door blowing air in and another at the window in my room blowing air out to really get the cycle going. Now that would be nice.

Labor Day

I really have no idea what the history is behind Labor Day, but I do know that it’s a paid vacation day for me so I’m definitely in favor of it. I’d have to say today was a nice and relaxing day. Played some frizolf, made some burritos for lunch, hung out with some people, etc. Definitely good times. Tomorrow starts another busy week with trying to fix things, training student workers and Oktoberfest 2k4 with Soulman in Chicago this coming weekend.

Lately I’ve started re-listening to some bands that I love but have pseudo forgotten as of late. These would include The Transplants, Muse, Pixies, Cold Play, The Raveonettes, etc. Music is so diverse and cool. I know some people that listen to music and have mood swings. I like to think I listen to music based upon the mood I’m in. I wonder if they’ve ever done studies on this kind of thing. There’s that line in High Fidelity where John Cusack wonders if kids were depressed from listening to pop music or listened to pop music because they were depressed. It may sound trivial but I’d say it’s something worth thinking about.

Gave away some more of those tamales today. I have some more strawberries left, I might just use the rest of those to make more. I should try other kinds of tamales too. I wonder what the next type of ‘hispanic’ food I should make is. Any suggestions? I still haven’t gotten the recipe for enchiladas from my grandma yet. I should call her up and ask her. If I mastered those, I’d truly feel like an accomplished cook and have the ability to make my favorite foods whenever I feel like it.

neville

Well JRod ended up staying the whole weekend. We went to church this morning and then hit up Red Sun for some Chinese lunch. It was pretty good.

Got to see Neville today! First time I’ve seen him since May I believe. It’s gonna be different not having him at the ETC. This will be my 6th year working there and he was there for years 2 through 5. He’s on his way to California and will be stopping at Joe and Cheryl’s on the way out. That’s quite a long drive but at least he’s got somewhere to stay on the way.

Made some more tamales today. They mostly turned out better than last time. I had way more in the pot this time then last time and I don’t think they all cooked evenly. Oh well, they at least all taste good.

No work tomorrow with Labor Day and all. I’m a big fan. That means I stay up late and sleep in and stuff.

Marathons and tamales

Well, last night we had the marathon. JRod, Tara, Bethany, Elaine, Liz, Toll and TLoft came over. Steve and Rachel showed up too for a bit. It was fun. By the time we were done with Chasing Amy it was only me, JRod, Tara and Bethany left. We had all seen Dogma recently so we skipped it and went on to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. All in all, I’d say it was a good marathon.

Today I made strawberry tamales. They are awesome. This was my first time ever making tamales so they weren’t perfect. Some of them didn’t get wrapped up tight enough. I think I’m going to make some more tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll be much better. I had a few that were really good. But most of them could’ve used some improvement.

Watching Royal Tenenbaums right now. Just saw the scene where Luke Wilson tries to kill himself. I’d have to say that’s my favorite scene in the movie. The music, the mood, the lighting, the cinematography, everything. It’s sad, gripping and compelling but it’s just…..beautiful. Sorta like in American Beauty with the bag floating in the wind sorta thing. I know somebody out there’s gotta know what I’m talking about.
